Marcel Kittel sprint power?
Listening to the team director from today's stage, and he mentioned Kittel with 2100 watts on his sprint? Can that be right? Maybe when fresh, but could that possibly be possible after 120 miles of racing?

He's big.
I'd expect that warmed up in the lab. At the end of 100+ miles, that is a lot of watts. It could be real but I expect that is more what he CAN turn out 30 min in, not 5 hours in.

Uran peaked at well over 1000W yesterday. Skinny climber after a grueling stage. Twice that for a guy who is born and bred to produce power and does it after being protected all day on a flat stage? Not hard for me to believe.

So for peak wattage, it definitely sounds doable to me and with the way he's putting lengths and lengths into dudes, why not?

Kittle is listed as 86kg (yea, yea everyone lies about their weight - I think he is heavier).
So 2100W/86kg = 24.41W/kg - peak power. Very doable as a peak and not worn out.
I expect there are two numbers. Peak power coach has seen and what he quotes for the press, then the other number that can be done at the end of a stage, which he should be quiet about.
This is the same forum (3 years ago) that had a hard time believing a 15 year old junior could do 22W/Kg.

I was like "dang nbd I can do 20 and I'm not even really a sprinter" but there's a huge difference between 20 and 22, forget about 24.
Anyway, I believe 2100 for Kittel.

I have a teammate that transitioned to track over the winter and he can do ~2000w, has a ridiculous 1min power, etc. Ask him to survive a crit and he will laugh at you. The thing that is kinda astonishing about Kittel is he can do 2000w AND has the ability to ride as much as he does. It's looney tunes, but that is why he is the best at what he does (when in form).

No doubt 120 miles of racing is tough, but the stars will have spent a lot of that time drafting. That is what their team is for, get the star athlete to the finish line in the best shape possible, sacrificing all the other riders.

is that what they call the freshmen 15?
anyway, i agree that a high peak wattage is not of much use as a standalone number. it needs to be taken into context the 10s avg, and other parts of the power curve, and how that changes after a long ride.

Blast from the Past
Been equally impressed with Kittel's length, 20s power. His Stage 11 win he had a very clear path and a wheel to accelerate at, but he has to start early to make up a lot of ground. That was a long way to go & made to look easy.

i quoted some #s from an actual TdF sprint here:
https://www.bikeforums.net/19706056-post1437.html
80kg sprinter, 17.5w/kg for the last 15", but the interesting part (to me) is the 5' prior, even moreso than the entirety of the stage.
