Greatness of Pinarello, are they truely that great?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you read the marketing literature widely available.. the points that every manufacturer is stressing is a variation of one another.

If you're spending that kind of coin, you are not going to get a bad bike, whatever brand you choose. Sure, some have a little edge in design/stiffness/weight etc. but once you are north of $10k, it's going to be mostly a matter of taste and fit. Perhaps quite a bit before you get to $10k. Maybe north of $5 k?

Dudelsack was just trolling when he wrote "Trek". I'm pretty sure that he's still on his meds. I just wish he'd give me some.

ok. A quick design point: The drive side and non-drive side of the frames are different shapes and laid up differently to address the specific loads. That's hard to tell by looking at a photo on the interwebz and probably has a lot to do with the ride quality.

But, oh yeah, the man is out go get you and is just ripping you off...they all come out of one factory in China...

OP, some people really like the look of Pinas. If that gets them out on the bike more often then looks = performance.
Personally I dislike them. Even uglier than the roubaix.

Perhaps i can only dream of a new, second bike. I quite recently built up a custom made Paduano Gladio. It has been taking time to finalize fit. I dare say it is not at all cheaper than a Pina, but i like it very much. I am curious of the sense and feel, that is what drives me to try new stuff. I personally would not buy a Pina. There are so many interesting brands/ bikes, it is very difficult to determine where to go from Gladio. I think, a light weight project would be very fun. But i wonder how those bikes are to ride?
Sadly better income and shorter working weeks don't go hand in hand.

happy with my '85 pinarello treviso. not the lightest but it has internal cable routing and smooths out the bumps since it's steel. i'd buy it again.

That's because in this class of race bike, the manufacturers are all striving for similar ride characteristics. There's only so many parts to a bicycle frame that can be modified to impact those.

BAM, market share and high profit/frame.

Winning.
The truth and nothing but the truth. But not the whole truth. What you left out is that Pinarello actually sells more bikes by overpricing them rather then fewer. There is a huge segment of the population that can't resist a rip off of that magnitude. "If a bike is that expensive and I can afford it, it must be good and I must be great." No decisions to make, no choices, just spend the most you can. As we say, "They drank the Kool Aid."

There's tons of Kool Aid to go around in the bike industry. Take a look at frame materials for instance.

I know. I mean, would you believe that there are people who claim that a heavier, weaker material is superior, especially when handcrafted by an "artisan" is his basement with no QC department!

The "premier pricing" model exists in a lot of markets, not just bikes.

True dat! You can get ripped off in almost any area of commerce. All you have to do is allow it to happen.

C'mon. You can't actually believe that, can you?

There is some price to pay for the. Brand but it's not like they are selling crap at a premium price. Do some research on the product before making such a silly statement.

Some of us understand why the name Pinarello makes cyclists giddy... and what made them great.

This is what comes to mind for many of us when the name is mentioned.

In the modern day that name carries some weight and from all accounts they still make a great bike.

Yes, of course. I never said it wasn't a good bike. I just said the only factor making it a $15,000 bike was the name and Italian mystique. Oh, and the effect of that price tag being so outrageous it confers legitimacy on itself. Counterintuitive but true. Can YOU honestly not put together a bike from parts that you think (from that research) will be as attractive and perform as well and be $7,500 cheaper (retail basis)? I know I can. QED

I couldn't outfit it as they have with a budget of $7,500 and still arrive at something my eyes considered attractive. I'd have to choose some less expensive components. Campy EPS would blow the budget.
