1981 Early. Custom built “diamond frame” by Gary Earl Hale in Eugene, OR. Purchased yesterday from the the original owner. Columbus SL, and Campy dropouts.
It’s currently built as SS/flip-flop with an assortment of entry level, and contemporary parts, aside from the Araya aero rims.
Gave it a Brooks this morning, and plan to put a full Record grouppo together for it this winter.

Here is a fillet brazed bike of mine that is by an unknown builder. It has no identification at all and no serial number. If anyone has a clue of the builder please chime in. There are some similarities to an early Ritchey.

Guess I can add this now. A Wayne Evans supposedly made in Denver. Just can't find any info on the builder. I got the bike from a multiple RAAM winner a couple of months ago. Made with EL OS tubing.

Super sweet! One of Mark's bikes from the 1980's, built in his little shop on the pre-gentrification Division Street in PDX. And, if you have a Taiwanese built Specialized and like it, Mark is one of the people you can thank for it.

Next update as promised, not sure about this. Generic gumwalls are a little big and were tough to get to stay on the rims, a bit wide and color seems off a bit. Still was a good reason to clean up the wheels some and overhaul the hubs.

@merziac I would recommend these skinwalls for old school mtb builds:
-Swift Ripp Johnson Jr. (made by Panaracer). 60tpi, folding, cheap, looks the part for an 80s ATB. Good for riding pavement as it has low profile knobs and a raised center.
-Panaracer Smoke/Dart. Repro by Panaracer. These are the legit NORBA-era tires.
-Onza Ibex. Expensive but amazing tire. Incredibly high quality and very light.

I've never seen one in person and from what you say, I probably won't.
Such a treasure to own and enjoy.

FWIW I'm out for a ride this morning on my Yeti SB5. Wish it had half the distinctive personality your Merz has, but it's still a hoot on trails.

I had never seen one in person or even for sale at all. I am glad it wasn't any more spendy, not that that would have stopped me and really wish it was bigger, oh well.
Not a MTB guy for sure so not likely to be ridden for that, especially being tweaked which I don't think matters anyway but....

Save up and buy right the first time.
Add some versatility with a front rack and bag. You have the makings of a top shelf all road bike.
