Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can only imagine. My wife fusses with her hair so much that if she ever started losing it I'm afraid she would never leave the house.

I take it you’ve never seen G.I. Jane. Demi Moore sports a mostly shaved head.

It’s officially spring. Zwift cancelled (effective April 5th).

On the off-chance anyone cares about my thoughts on the Smith/Rock incident...

I find it interesting we draw such a line between physical attacks (the minor sort here - no he wasn't going to kill the man, no matter what Stern says) and verbal. Verbal bullying is bullying. Verbal abuse is abuse. Verbal attacks are attacks, and can absolutely hurt both the person is question and others (in this case, others with alopecia) - it's the same situation as hate crimes causing a chilling effect on the targeted group. Here of course, besides alopecia sufferers, cancer victims going through chemo would feel the hit too. While I won't say Smith was "right" (he wasn't, to be clear), as a former victim of mostly-verbal bullying, it absolutely hurts and contributes to the long-term psychological damage most of you have seen on me.

Until we reach a point where there is other recourse for it (and that doesn't square with the First Amendment, of course...) I have little sympathy for bullies who hide behind "it's just a joke", which I was told over and over by the kids bullying me, by the teachers. Eff that noise. The only bit that makes this more interesting is that usually verbal bullying is done from a position of social superiority (in the power sense, regardless of "punching up" nonsense), but I would have assumed Smith is the more powerful celebrity in this case. Regardless, Rock deserves a whole lot of incoming for being a shower tote, and doesn't suddenly get sympathy just because his desired victim hit back differently.

It actually neatly parallels current events, where we can't bomb Moscow... but we'll happily take action to try to send them into Depression-level economic devastation. Probably better than B-52s in formation, but it will cause a lot of damage and hardship without a trigger pull.

Meanwhile I'd shave my head if I had the slightest excuse, but I'm still worried if I just do it for no good reason people will assume I'm a white supremacist.

I put new trigger shifters and brake levers on my wife's mtb/town bike. I hung it by the seatpost while making final adjustments. It just never crossed my mind that someone would take that personally.
genejockey I can only hope those pliers show up. It would be a treat to have two.

I don't think anyone has condoned Rock's joke. It's just that there was likely a better way to handle the situation on the Smith side.

I do think there is a difference between hiding behind "it's a joke" when bullying versus a comedian being paid to make people laugh although they shouldn't profit at the expense of others. In other words, I don't think Rock used "the joke" to gain power or control over the Smiths like bullies do. I think he used it thinking he was entertaining people, albeit at someone else's expense. Neither are appropriate, although I think the bullying is far worse because it is used to subjugate people.

This is just opinion, and I'm not an expert.

The other day, I was awakened by Rango barking. This happens a lot, but usually it's a pattern where he goes, "Bark, bark, bark!....(pause)...bark, bark, bark, bark!...(pause)" and repeats - barking and listening for a response from other nearby dogs. This particular morning it was, "Bark!...Bark!...Bark!...Bark!...Bark!...Bark!...", just barking without the usual pauses. I looked out the bedroom window, and I see.....

Silly galoot was trying to warn us about a duck. Mission accomplished.

We get Mallards stopping for a break in our pool this time of year. Our dog goes nuts. Ducks just look at her and say, "Silly princess. We're not worried about you because we know you won't get your hair wet."

Only problem is the ducks sheit and drop eggs into the pool, and then we have to clean it up.

I did not see the Oscars, and I expect there is plenty of blame to go around.

That said, celebrities are usually fair game for comedians’ jokes, and comedians are known for making insulting jokes, so I think the conclusion should be fairly obvious. If he made a bad joke about someone’s child under 18 that is obv a different matter.

On the Will Smith thing. Chris Rock was hired to do exactly what he was doing. Bagging on the stars is a tradition. Everyone of them knows about it. There have been far, far worse things said to and about others and there has never been an episode of physical violence before, certainly not during the awards and once again I'll point out. No charges filed. Even though it happened live on television in front of hundreds of witnesses.
If it were you or I we would have gone to jail. No award for you!

Those are summer wheels. They go on in May or June and come off in October.
