Fork compatibility

Looking to replace the stock steel fork on my steel bike, which has a crown race 30mm. No idea what that means. I found a Columbus futura caliper sl that is identical dimension except has crown diameter 46mm. Will it fit? Both forks are 1 1/8 straight steerer forks. Also let me know if there are superior options. This one Runs about $400 shipped and 320 grams advertised weight.

Steerer size isn't usually specified by crown race. But it seems that you have a 1 1/8" steerer and the Columbus fork also has a 1 1/8" steerer. So it will probably fit. I don't know why they are specifying the crown diameter, except maybe to tell you that it's going to be much larger than your head tube. So it might look funny.

The thing I saw at the columbus site said "crown diameter," not crown race diameter. I think that means it's meant to go into a 44mm head tube with a crown race adapter. Or some other larger head tube. It's probably going to stick out a bit from the head tube on a steel frame that was made for a 1 1/8" steerer fork.

I could be wrong, I didn't look too hard for a drawing that gives dimensions. I'll try to look later

The futura SL seems to be a tapered steerer so I don't think it will work.

The Caliper SL version of the Futura fork is an 1 1/8" steerer and will fit your frame. The 46mm crown diameter means that you will have a 6mm flat "shelf" of crown showing all the way around what is likely to be a 34mm head tube.

I think an external headset will cover that shelf up just fine. I still couldn't find a drawing of that fork. Searching for 1 1/8" forks makes me think I should get back to work on designing my 44mm tapered head lugs.

My search brought up the SLX which is tapered. Dsaul is correct. It's a straight 1-1/8" so you'll be fine.
