Overcoming boredom?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd spend some more time on the 41. You daily route will seem super interesting after reading a few threads here.

I would say find a group, but that might be pressing the time issue. How about find one day where you have more than 30 minutes of free time and just go out to explore? Yes, driving there might seem a bit counteractive, but I would have become really bored with a 15 minute radius from my home. I'm planning to drive 1.5 hours to climb a 3hr/40min mountain next weekend. Mixing in new stuff like that plus riding with a group will greatly enhance the cycling experience. It'll guarantee you get better too. (Who wants to be the slowest one? The 2nd to last slowest one? MOP? 2nd?)

I hate getting hit by cars. Trying to cut down.
You are a better man than I am, I would have to give up riding if I had to do that.

buy a trainer, Ride the trainer. Do this for a week, then ride your route. Better yet, start the ride early, ride 30 mins on the trainer, ride your route.

Trust me that any real ride after a trainer ride will feel like you are in heaven*

How do you guys combat this issue? I don't have any trails for off-roading nearby, and driving somewhere to cycle is very unappealing for time reasons.
30 minutes a day is a good start ... tomorrow, go 40 minutes. The next day go 50 minutes. The next day go 60 minutes.

Mix it up ... do a relaxed 30 minutes one days a week, do a fast 30 minutes one day, do 40 minutes of intervals one day, do a 60 minute hill climb ride one day, and do a longer ride (2+ hours) one day ... that's 5 days of riding, and then it's up to you if you want to take a day or two off to rest or if you want to keep riding.

And driving somewhere to ride isn't a bad thing ... Rowan and I spent the weekend about a 5-hour drive from home in order to do some cycling in a different area, and spend some time at the beach.

Part of the reason we're doing some cycling in a different area is because we're taking on a cycling challenge up on by Tourism Victoria ... so one idea to combat boredom is to start taking on cycling challenges such as your local century ride, or whatever else is going in your area.

I CANNOT believe that you have ONLY 30 minutes to ride. Think about how much time you waste watching a single full length TV show. Skip one show, triple your available time.

And I commented to Rowan on Thursday this week that I was feeling a bit bored when faced with the prospect of riding our "usual" 25 km out-and-back!!!!!

We opted to go swimming and then test ride the brand new (but unpaved, so unsuitable for road bicycles) rail trail instead. Just for something different.

I would agree with the ride harder if you can't ride any longer. In 30 minutes I'm guessing you're getting about 7-10 miles in? I bet you start riding harder you can get yourself a little further, or you could finish your distance even faster. You get fast enough and you'll find yourself looking for more time to ride.

If it hasn't already been said by someone else, I would urge you to throw in two or three all out sprints on your rides.
That keeps it real.

Riding backwards, however, requires lots of flexibility( particularly without a mirror) and great balance. Also with many pedal systems you need to reverse your cleats.

IMHO, not worth the hassle.
