I’m anticipating a “what tubulars are best to ride on the trainer?” thread.

In my game, no matter how hard I pedal I can't beat this F. Maertens guy in the sprint.

I hated Zwift on my Wahoo KICKR Snap...using a cheap Lenovo laptop and HDMI to a cheap 32” LCD.
So I put it up for sale on CL, not realizing it was likely one of very few available. Wow, leverage.
But that’s not me.
A college prof from U of Neb. sent me a message, so off it went.
Today, my girl had more issues with Zwift... while I found her neglected Mac Pro in a spare room.
It took an hour to get the Mac on line, then load Zwift and set up.
Got it working. It is 500% better than it was. Smooth, better video, seamless so far.
I followed Doc’s advice and got a better fan for her, a Vornado.
We put the smaller fan behind her and directed at at the KICKR.
Now, I wish I’d maybe waited on selling the KICKR Snap.....

But I need the skills I’ll learn on the mangl.....er, rollers.

Was out looking at frames and one seller said he had rollers for sale.
Took a look; yep, Inside Ride E-Motion.. Great minds.

Rollers in the 80's. I hated every minute but somehow found the motivation for hour-long sessions for a couple winters. Eventually I gifted them to a bud, who has never ridden them once. Smart guy.

Through the 90's and 2000's, off an on gym memberships. I rode the various indoor trainers. Hated. Every. Minute.

Back then I lived in Indiana, which has a variety of bitter cold, freeze/thaw, snow/slush/refrozen slush, ice storms, etc. Nonetheless I started riding outdoors in winter to avoid the much hated indoor stuff. -20F was my low; at that temp, skin coverage and moisture management are where it's at. Still better than riding indoors.

I lived in west Texas for a bit, which has mild winters but between darkness and 70-80mph rural road traffic, winter riding was limited. Commuting and weekend rides were okay, no indoor stuff during that time.

Somewhere in there I signed up for a spin class. Me, 20 young women, and a trainer screaming at us over the loud music to PICK IT UP PICK IT UP PICK IT UP when I was already at the limit. Slightly less horrid than rollers in my basement, and I hit the spring in the best shape ever. In fact I finally hit my 400 miles in 24 hour goal that year at the N24H Challenge. But still pretty much hated it and don't care to repeat.

Last fall I broke my neck in a crash on a dark twisty descent. Which gave me time to think about life choices whilst waiting for things to mend back together. Recovery rides started on the indoor trainer. I Hated. Every. Minute.

Right now I have a mag trainer in the garage, picked up for free, that's not going to see 100 miles with me because it's just a boredom inducing torture machine. I'm not going to say I'd rather break my neck. But almost.

Yesterday I rode 145 miles outdoors, dark to dark. The dark bit getting back into Portland sucked due to traffic and crap in the bike lanes, but still better than indoors. Problem is I don't get out enough to keep fitness where I want it.

At 60 I'm feeling the need to add more structured training to slow the inevitable downward athletic slide, so a smart trainer is coming. I feel it's probably a waste of $, but at least I get a deep discount so it won't hurt so much. Who knows, maybe all the technology entertainment garbage will make it tolerable. Thing is, I look at pixels all day long for $$, and I kinda don't want to look at pixels as my stress reliever.

I’m using a MacBook Pro from 2012, and it runs no problem at all. It was one hell of a laptop at the time though. I’ve been thinking about replacing it with a current equivalent.

My one winter doing regular spin class, now more than 10 years ago, was okay but it wasn’t like riding an actual bike. I’m not even sure I felt much benefit once actual outdoor riding season started or at least more than I get from running during the winter, which I’ll do regularly if it’s not snowing. I remember well one sequence in a spin class when the workout would involve three “climbs.” On the first, I was really sucking wind, doubting if I could make all three. On the second I felt marginally better, but not great. On the third, I was breathing normally and not at all feeling like I was close to max effort. Yeah, I need a long warmup or am much more of a distance “spinner” than a sprinter.

I'm gonna go ahead and quote myself and add, sometimes I ride a recumbent and the occasional roadie will say "that's not a real bike". Well hell that might be true at least it's not frickin' indoors.

I hate my new smart trainer already, and it probably hasn't even shipped yet.

I've searched for ways to ride all my favorites indoors, especially as I've become more of a fair-weather rider, but it's just not the same. I've tried a ton of options I see peppered in this thread, posted some pics of trainers between the day I stopped lurking on BF and finally signed up.

That said, I should probably read the entire thread before posting this, but strapped on time.

I finally broke down last year and researched the crap out of what was on the market for stationaries. After testing a way-more-hardcore-than-me modern cyclist friend's Keiser, at the tail-end of trying products by Schwinn, Wahoo and others, we shelled out for a Keiser M3i with the bluetooth module. Put it in a small gym space I built for my wife and I after having kids so we could avoid gaining that "new parent 50" we saw several other parents pack on. Got a decent used 47" TV mounted on the wall with ARC support, attached an 4th gen Apple TV then installed the Peloton app on it, and for a nominal monthly fee for the Peloton subscription, we may as well have a spin gym right here in our house.

She actually rides it way more than me, it's been a great purchase for both of us. I haven't used it for a few months (and it showed on a recent short hilly jaunt with a fellow BF'er) but it works when used. It's extremely smooth, much quieter than anything in my stable, smooth, and arguably much smoother and more sensible than indoor trainers. As much as I wanted to find an indoor I liked, it just wasn't happening, and the Assault AirBike was too damn noisy and impractical, it's impossible to get a "real" ride out of those things. They're great if you just want bruteforce cardio, they suck for actually feeling like you're on a ride.

One of these days I may end up trying out some of the other apps out there. I hear there's some that'll actually give you a HUD with the course in front of you, which could be cool given the larger TV component involved. I can't complain.

Only thing I'd say is, the Bluetooth module was overkill. I'm sure I could hook it up to a trainer like my friend does with his, but we ride for different reasons these days. It was $50 extra which was nothing at the time, so we got it. Unless you're interested in tracking every component of your ride in apps (if you do that), I don't think it's worth the expense.

I think the key is to use the porn samples as rewards, rather than being the main theme. Little snippets of porn for athletic achievements.

You're welcome.

Riding stationary on any kind of equipment bores me to tears, although I've got a set of rollers for days that I feel like bothering. Fortunately, I've got a nice selection of IGH English roadsters and sports, so it's just bundle up in my street clothes and hit the roads around here daily. 5 mile minimum, preferably 8-10 miles daily. And, if I can knock out a few errands in the process, all the better. If I bother to put on cycling clothes (I've yet to find anything that keeps me warm enough in a Virginia winter) and take out a derailleur bike, it's 20 miles minimum.

He and a couple of the other members of the Ohio State Cycling Club would ride the entire TOSRV round trip on Saturday, then do it again on Sunday. Normally TOSRV was 105 miles from Columbus OH to Portsmouth OH on Sat and 105 miles back on Sunday, so these guys were doing 210+miles each day. Back-to-back double-Centuries! I was in awe. I was more than happy that I could ride the 105 miles each day in six hours... They were doing the doubles in less than eight!
Had a set of Cortina's back in the 70's in Erie, they went away about the same time I left cycling the first time. Having ridden TOSRV a number of years in the 70's (I think '76 was my last one) I remember the crazies doing the round trip in one day. And I thought I was hot **** doing it in under eight hours each day.

I usually ride outside during winter as its pretty mild in the midlands here in UK, winter mtb boots and thermal bibs 😁
But 'when the weather outside is ****eful' like it's been for the past few weeks now, I ride a Tacx Neo 2T on a dedicated trainer / beater bike.
Would def love a big screen, but this keeps me motivated to ride outside as much as possible, so I don't buy one for that reason.

I don't ride indoors. I hate it. And arms race is a good term for the equipment market.

I have no desire to ride outdoors if it’s under 45F.

I really enjoy sneaking a 25 minute ride in during my “lunch break.” Gives me some fuel for the rest of the day.

There was a 5-minute window for the top Kickr yesterday. My girl’s should arrive tomorrow.

Nor for me. I’m reducing all my bikes’ weights by 20 lbs, mainly to take $100 from seypat but also to be ready in the spring.

Had a set of Kreitler rollers, picked them up in 1979, from a fellow club member. Loved riding them once I found the balance points, and set up a box fan for give some air movement in our little bungalow house that got us through college. Wish to this day that I had kept both the rollers, and the Raleigh International that I rode on them.

Now its an entry level Kurt Kinetic wind resistance/freewheel trainer stand, a yoga mat from Amazon (the exact same mat material and manufacturer as the all too expensive name logo mats,) a Kreitler front wheel block. All set up as needed, in our living room so I have the ceiling fan for air movement/cooling, and I tune the cable TV to Music Choice, 70s channel. Its been good enough to seem me through the recovery from heart surgery in October 2019, the initial Covid-19 shut down last March, and now the getting past passing my first kidney stone, and then being bitten by two dogs the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Day, while finishing up a ride. Don't bother to ask about either event, I'm fine and just being cautious for once in my life.

My indoor setup below. Bike is a Springfield Special until I get another frame ready. CycleOps fluid trainer, Wahoo speed and cadence sensor, heart rate sensor reporting to a basic Wahoo app on my phone. Rotating fan blows across me, I don't like having it on me the whole time. Usually have the History Guy playing on the screen. I find 30 minutes about my limit of enjoyment, so I am often doing intervals.

I picked up a Wahoo Core and Zwift for my Birthday and Christmas.
Only 3 days of riding at this point and in the process of understanding it all.
It is entertaining for what it is.
I certainly feel it in my legs!

My observations:
The RGT app puts the resistance at 100%. Real world conditions. It is brutal.

Zwift app resistance is at 50% by default. I find that much more manageable.

Got it working. It is 500% better than it was. Smooth, better video, seamless so far.
Mac Pro is a $5000+ computer w/o the monitor for the base model and generally comes with a top of the line graphics card and 8-core Xeon processor. Even an old one should sure as hell be able to run Zwift at the max settings without a problem.
