The crank bolt holes on the TA 144 BCD X 41T ring I have have are so close to the rings teath that the chain actually contacts the ends of the crank arm spiders. I found the TA 41 ring at Odyssey Bicycles in Sausalito some years ago when Tony Tom let me rummage through some of his parts drawers at the shop.... He was surprised himself when I pulled out the chainring from his stash....

+1 on gugie 's suggestion in post #6.
Red Clover Triplizer w/ 28T inner
You *might not* need a longer BB spindle:
We have clearance, Clarence!
Mine shifts well with my original Suntour Cyclone front derailleur, to boot. I changed the rear derailleur to a Suntour V-GT Luxe, and the whole setup works pretty well.
My geezer gearing mods.
No historical hogwash; we're fixing our bikes here.

Small Chainrings on 144 BCD Cranks.
Bianchi used a mishmash of Campy parts on their 1981-83 Campione Del Mondo bikes: a mix of GS, NR & SR components. My 1981 shipped with GS cranks, and a Bianchi modified 52T large chainring pantographed with a "B". The 42T inner ring was standard with all the webbing. By the time I got the bike it had an SR large chainring. The cobby old 42T bothered me. I didn't have a 42T SR ring and wasn't about to spend money for such a trivial annoyance. Purely cosmetic!
I'd come by a number of 41T 144 BCD rings and this TA ring fit the bill... From 10 feet most folks couldn't even spot the GS arms much less a 41T...
Now doesn't that look better?
BTW, a 41T-28T combo offers only 1" lower gearing than a 42T-28T!
A number of left coast folks drilled standard Campy cranks to make triples using smaller BCD rings: usually 86mm or 74mm BCD. I have one with a 28T drillium ring. If I ever used it I'd probably switch to a 30T or 32T solid ring. Over the years, I ovalized a number of 26T TA chainrings stomping up a steep grade from a dead stop.
I can appreciate the ECV ethos with regards to the 1958 design Record cranks still being copied today. Some of my bikes are all NR or SR but in my supernumerary state, image isn't everything and what price glory?
I've gone to the dark side on some of my mismash Campy bikes and used gasp! Campy Victory cranks with 50T - 35T, 36T or 38T chainrings! OH THE HORROR!
Hide your eyes!
I have Campy Compe Triples on several other bikes...
I don't think that I'll ever build another triple bike. Two years ago I put a VO Grand Cru 50T-34T compact crank on a new frame. I have to say that it was the best made crank I'd seen in almost 50 years of wrenching. Unfortunately the current offerings don't seem to be as nice!

A Flying Scot? ? Always wanted one.
But my Grandfather Angus would urge you to nae be throwing yer coins aboot, laddie.
42 vs 41? You’d get a a bigger difference by going to a smaller tire size according any of the interactive gear charts. And it would cost less than the elusive 41.
If you still need lower gears, you can still be period correct by looking further than Italy. And you will enjoy the ride a lot more.
