Hello does anyone in here play polo? made a silly impulse purchase of a Polo mallet but it did not come with any instructions. can anyone give me an idea how to start?

I don't play but it seems pretty obvious that the mallet head needs to be drilled somehow. You should ask the shop you bought it from, there's a toll free phone # on their web site.

I emailed them earlier and I will call tomorrow. I assumed it needs drilled but for the thin or thick end of the handle

this is how we make them. our club has been thinking about those milwaukee kits, but we wanted some feedback. do you play polo? if not, what are you gonna do with a mallet? dog defense? lol

Alls I did was to drill a hole in the top and the bottom of the head which was slightly smaller than the shaft. Then I pushed the head onto the shaft with just a tiny of the shaft poking out the bottom. It should be difficult to push the shaft into the head due to the tight fit. Then I drilled a very small hole through the side of the head into the shaft at a diagonal angle. Then I put a wood screw through the head and into the shaft. It looks flimsy but if done right it's actually very sturdy. After this I took a large size drill bit and drilled out a ton of 'speed holes' all over the upper portion of the head. The benefit of this method is that you don't have a nasty piece of bolt sticking out of the side of the head to catch someone in the face. There are pictures of this method on the internet but I can't be bothered to find em.

I have made dozens of mallets, but everyone has their own method. I think MKE was aiming their offering toward existing players that know how to make mallets, but can't obtain the parts. Ski poles and HDPE (or UHMWPE) tubing can be incredibly difficult to find in some areas.

Yes, the tubing is shockingly difficult to find. I went to like 6 different plumbing warehouses and hardware stores and finally found what i needed sticking out of a trashcan. I think it was part of a road pylon.

No I do not play Polo, I am not sure if anyone around here does. I got it as an impulse buy and thought it mught be fun way to amuse my self in an empty parking lot on the weekends.

I know that the shaft should intersect the head at the mid-way point, and the head-to-shaft angle should be about 75 degrees.
I got my mallet as a complete unit and those are its specs anyway.
The shaft for yours looks like it could take a golf grip. If you want a larger diameter, you can always load it up with hockey tape.

Everyone round these parts play with mallets set up with head to shaft angle at 90 degrees. Also every picture I've seen online is at 90. Am I misunderstanding what you mean? I feel like it would be hard to make a shot with a mallet head at an off angle.

I've always played with one that has an angled head. I know people that use big 90 degree ones, but I hate missing a shot when the heel clips the ground.

hold on... are we talking grass polo, or hardcourt? mcflux looks like a grass guy, whereas the OP's kit is for hardcourt. 2 different animals.

I play with the fibercane, on a grass field. Awesome! Order it "whippy".

But I also used to mess around with making them. Skinny end goes into the mallet head. put a grip of your choice on the fat end.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the kit is for hard court polo, a short field where "flipping" and a small tap of the ball will work. The fibercane mallet I posted a second ago, is for whackingthe heck out of a heavier inflated small soccer type balls that are for grass field polo. have fun!

that fibercane looks like a real mallet. does anyone know of a organized (or disorganized) group that plays polo in the So jersey area?

hey Bianchigirl, the fibercane rocks. the polo groups I know of from "your area" are: Mount Washingto Bike Polo Association in Baltimore MD. Just a few hours. Unionville Pennsylvania has a hardcore group too. They're both turf players. No hardcourt. and...I"m using "your area" loosely, it's a few hours drive across states over there on the east side.
