I know they aren't a household name, but I think folks who check them out will be very glad they did:

+1, QFT

I wear a $30 Giro Mojave, looks just like atmdad's. You will want some adjustability to fit a liner if you're in a cold climate like me. I recommend buying in a store where you can try 'em on. All helmets have to comply with the same safety regs, so if you find a cheap one that fits well go for it.

Edit: A helmet is used up after one good hit, replace as needed and don't begrudge the cost. I used to work rehabbing head-injured patients - trust me, you don't want to walk a mile in their shoes.

I picked up a Uvex Supersonic from my LBS and it is great. I really like the latching system they use. I find the chin strap to be comfy and they even put mesh over the front vents to help keep bugs from getting caught in the helmet, too.

[QUOTE=tashi;11881654]Giro Atmos in White. So very very nice. Giro's fit my head and have saved my life more times than I care to think about.

Ditto here. Atmos in dark graphite. Good solid feel and fit.

I like lifestyles, never had one break on me...

OH! That sort. I have a Giro Atlas. Bought it a few years ago @ my LBS. I have a large head (no pun intended) and this was one of the few helmets that adjusted enough.

I also have a Nutcase, in brown with Hawaiian flowers on it. Looks great with the Root Beer Bomber, of course. But I find the fit awkward (you can only switch in and out the pads, and I seem to be sized between the thickest and medium pads), and it's uncomfortable for long rides. It's heavy and awkward, somehow. Looks awesome, though, I must say. I like the one that looks like half a watermelon on your head.

I have two Giros, a bike helmet and a ski helmet, and I love them both. On cold days, I have ridden with my ski helmet on instead, as it has the ear covers and liner. Soooo comfy, though it does get hot (I don't really mind that when it's below freezing). It's pink, and shaped like the Nutcase. My bike Giro is just a cheap white one from my lbs, but I like it and it's much more comfortable than the Nutcase. Dials up and down, it's light, and it looks sexier with my purple-and-white bike than the brown one would!

I was wearing another cheap Giro when, two years ago, I went over the handlebars into gravel at about 15 miles an hour. Hit my hands, then my head. Cracked two ribs and broke a bone in my hand, but didn't even get a concussion. I would never, ever ride without a helmet now, after that fall. It rippled the back of the helmet, though I hit in the front. Imagine what that impact would have done to my skull!

I wear a Bern Berkeley (that would be a Brentwood for the boys)-- I wear it in the summer with a brim insert, and in the winter, I ski in it with the Winter insert that covers the ears, and I cycle this way as well. It doesn't look quite as dorky as a normal bike helmet and it serves dual purposes for me, so good all the way around. it is also pretty light and well vented for a multi sport helmet, so I like that too.

I would like a Bern for their classic looks and winter benefits... rocking the Alpina on the vintage bikes just looks wieid unless it's the Cooper as then I am just a blur anyways.

I often ride the vintage bikes sans helmet...

I use a Fox Flux it looks kind of funny on a road bike, but it fits my large head well and has been impact tested

I'm looking at the various bike helmets I posted links to (above) because my fancy red, racing-inspired helmet just does not coordinate well (looks stupid) with my new commuting bike. I am not a kid any longer and I and I'm not racing on my way to/from work.

I'd go for something light. I can't imagine wearing my Nutcase to commute. Too heavy and awkward.

I tried on a UVEX and a FOX. Both were comfy, but neither were in stock in my size, they only had L/XL which fit, but left me no room for a winter hat (cause it's getting COLD!). So my search continues

I have two Bell helmets. one has less venting and the other more, with a minimum of pin tail extensions and horns. Both are white, which is increasingly harder to locate, both are light. I use the one with less venting on cold days. Bell fits my noggin well without lots of extra padding fuss.

I selected Bell due to that, in an impact something that fits well from the get go, will disperse loads better.

You may want to check with your health insurance provider. Mine (Blue Cross) will reimburse me up to $25 per year per person on the policy.

I have a Giro, with the rembursement the final cost was $10.

Good thread timing, as I have been looking to replace the Specialized Airfoil (IIRC) with something a bit less clunky looking. Kinda looking at some Giros, and the UVEX and other recommendations. I really would prefer spending <$100.

KOBE: where in your Blue Cross coverage did you find this? Looking through mine online now, but so far...

Just picked up one of these - Bern G2. The adjustable ventilation is excellent, and the removable ear flaps make it much more comfortable to ride when it's cold.

Another thing that came up yesterday during helmet discussion.... the salesperson made mention that certain helmets are suitable for winter and summer sports. Any insight into this? Is it because they (winter helmets) are rated for multiple impacts? Or does it have something to do with being more "pliable" in the cold? I'm probably over analyzing this....

Here is a link to the program. If it does not come up, search " Bicycle helmet" from their website.

I would bet this has more to do with the desin of the ventilation, the winter helmets having less ventilation and/or vents you can adjust to open or close them. A winter helmat has ear covers (or removable ear covers). A winter cycling helmet is not too different from a skiing helmet.
