Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cervelo C5 or Specialized Roubaix

I am looking for a bike that can double as gravel and a road bike. Not sure how big of tires each can take. Any thoughts?

Are you looking at new or used bikes? 2018? If the details aren't on their website, just ask (e-mail), then if you keep the e-mail, you'll have a record of the question/answer. Are the bikes in a shop where you can look at then?

I think 28mm is common for most rough road bikes now, but I don't believe at least Specialized has gone with really big tires yet.

Get the Roubaix. Its not out of place on a really fast road ride, and it excels on gravel and chip seal. I believe that it's just about the pinnacle in do-it-all type bikes. Stick a Revelator bag on the rear and go touring. It can take a 32 tire or at least a 30. If you need more width than that, you really should be on a mountain bike.

Specialized Diverge. If you want to be particularly sporty, you can dress it in aero wheels for the road and fatties for the gravel.

Diverge for '18 comes with Future Shock. Btw, Future Shock isn't for everybody. In particular its advantage shrinks as tire width grows.

The 2017+ Specialized Roubaix will fit at least 32s. I think mine would fit up to 35mm wide, but it would be tight. I ride the occasional gravel road and lots of loose chip & seal with mine.

I have a C3, which is the same frame shape but a different layup compared to the C5. I have 33 mm of rubber, there's probably ~1 mm clearance on either side at the base of the chanstays.

The bike rides beautifully. It's incredibly nimble and handles exactly the way a bike should.
