Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Sunday Ride (April 27th, 2008)

Well, another sunday is here. Yesterday I had a friend from out of town come over with his family. Had a great time, rode a little with him, diner, etc. Nice time.

I am sitting here getting ready to head out. Not sure what route or distance I'll do today, but I am thinking I should do something in the 60-100 mile today. I keep hearing my new bike talk to me in a rough french accent telling me: "C'om on, take me away fat boy!!" We'll se where the wind takes me. Will post later.

How was your ride today?

Lousy.

Cold and raining when I left the apt. at 8:40, en route to meet up with Gimbels on Rt. 100 in White Plains.

Long story short, I wussed out half way there (more like 3 quarters of the way there) in Dobbs Ferry, and went back home.

The worst part was that the rain stopped, and the sun came out nearly the instant I rolled onto my sidewalk.

Oh well. Maybe I'll go out for s'more later.

Yeah, a bit cold over here too. I did the longest ride at the start of my season so far (35 miles) yesterday, so I took the day off the bike and swam some laps in the pool.

Well we're back, We (me and the wife) did 56 miles total. First 10 miles was out to meet our club and then we joined them until they stopped for something to eat, we just keep going, and rode for home. Nice weather 50's and sunny, with light wind.

Legs were toast for the most part, from all the moutain riding this past week, otherwise good ride!!

Just got back. 86 painful miles. Half of that was with a headwind, which was killing me. The weather was great though with clear and very sunny skies starting out in the mid 70's and ending at 80 degrees. I was very tired heading out to begin with, so that did not help.

This is the longest ride so far in my new bike. Love the bike to say the least. Playing with the powertap unit has given me some insights into what I am doing right and wrong already, one of which is that I can't trust how I am feeling. Yesterday an the day before I rode very hard (felt that way) while feeling good and strong. Today I felt like crap and yet I was still generating about the same wattage (actually about 5% lower, but my heart rate would not get in the 150's or 160's despite added effort. The one thing I am loving the most about the bike is that the new fitting has given me so much more power that I am easily riding 1-4 MPH faster than with the previous fit and bike for the same conditions and roads. I ride the same roads and loops all the time, so it is very easy for me to compare performance, speed, etc. between one day or another. The one thing I am hating to no end is the new saddle. This thing is digging a new hole in me Cambodian prison style!! I was nearly in tears at one point, but the only thing that kept me going was the inner voice of the bike in a rough french hooker accent saying: "C'om on vagina boy, harden the fook up and ride me hard". Needless to say, this saddle is coming off tomorrow and replacing it with the old saddle until something new gets tried. Also, I will drop the stem some more since I will be working on the bike anyway. Other minor derailer adjustments need to be done as well.

101 km with three friends, all went OK. Pleasant surprise: I wasn't as tired as I was supposed to be after 170 km yesterday and was able to hang on in the peloton.

3 friends is a peloton??

Weather stinks here and I got a stomach bug from my 3 year old. May get out later if I feel better....not sure how I feel about being too far from a toilet right now.

In fact, 6 of us started and another joined later. At about 20 km 3 were dropped and me and my 3 friends continued and eventually joined a group of about 10 riders, we went together for some kms, then we split and at about 70 km stopped to wait for the remaining 3. BTW, what is the smallest number for a group to be called a peloton?

Tour de Lake Hopatcong - 40.75 miles, time 2:54. Some very challenging climbs...I'm used to steep grades, but I'm not used to long, steep grades. I definitely was not fast, but I didn't finish last, and it was a good test. I literally didn't know I was even going to this ride when I woke up, due to the expected weather. And when I went, I didn't know if I was going to ride. But, I did, and I'm d@mn happy I did.

Hey, fat + long, steep climbs = slow. Did anyone else know that?

Next week, the 3 State, 3 Mountain challenge. There is a whole lotta slow in the forecast...

Organised 40 miler and one I class as the first try out of the year. Target to aim for was 2 hrs 30 minutes as that is what I have done on the Tandem for the last 3 years. Fairly flat but across the Marshes with a lot of tight turns to slow you down. One slope for about 5 miles at average 10% to slow you down. Did it in 2 hours 35 on the TCR so quite happy.

Never could warm up....low 50's but a cold wind and damp.

...the usual 26-ish miles with one chase and drop of a guy along the way for fun.

Will it ever warm up?

Tour of the Tucson Mountains. 71 miles. 3:06 finish. 6 minutes shy of Platinum qualification for El Tour de Tucson. Ugh.

But I really don't see how I could have gone any faster. It's not like there was another group just a little further ahead that I could have caught or anything. So I'm happy with the experience. Tho if it had just been less windy, I think I could have made it...

I waited to see if it was to rain as forecasted, it didn't, so I did a quick 30-miler. It was windy though, 12-15mph.
