That's too bad man, as you well know and I know because I've seen a lot of your bikes, there is always another one.

Been thinking about a trip to northeastern Pennsylvania where I grew up, there's dirt roads and logging trails that I would like to bike. Some of the roads get pretty rutted and sometimes washed out so I don't think my road bike frame even with 28s would work well so I've been keeping a lookout for a used Moots cyclocross frame or bike. Your trail photos inspired me to look a little harder.

A thread with a difference! I'm usually posting photos of one of my 40 or so C & V steel or vintage aluminium bikes here. What a refreshing change to show my trio of "modern" bikes that are my current daily rides now I am gingerly returning to cycling from cancer treatment. Each was built by me for a specific purpose, and as such is quite unique. None of these has been hugely expensive, often using parts already in hand or taking advantage of special offers (just as well, given the amount of time I have been unable to work during this illness!)

The SAB trekking/town bike has a new ultralight alloy frame with a used Vista carbon fork, carbon flat bars, stem and seat post. Dual pivot brakes, Tiagra 9 speed with double crankset and alloy mudguards. This is the bike I built to use in my job as a Cycling Instructor. It is a lovely ride, not tiring to be in the saddle all day but doesn't look too different from the bikes my pupils bring along. This saves them thinking "he can only do that because he's on a racing bike!' I'm looking forward to being well enough to teach again on this bike.

The Planet X Pro carbon full carbon road bike is/was my "bucket list bike", slowly built over the months when I could only wrench a few minutes at a time/ The plan was to build a bike that would be all the bike I would ever need, just so I could ride it in case the outcome was not successful. During this build, mostly using new parts apart from the saddle, Dura Ace gears and Ultegra brifters, I made several upgrades as better parts became available at good prices - new Fulcrum Racing 5 wheels to replace my old Bontragers, Ultegra brakes, Campagnolo carbon crankset, 3T carbon Aeronova bars and carbon pro stem and seatpost. Pedals at the moment are old platforms, I do have a pair of Time carbon clipless pedals but can't yet ride with them. I have ridden this a short distance and look forward to riding further and longer as my strength improves. Altogether it has now cost me around £500 in total.

The white bike was given to me in pieces. It is a 2004 model Raleigh 100 with an Airlite alloy frame. The original steel aero fork was monolithic, weighing around 3lbs on its own. I replaced it with a new aero carbon fork, upgraded the gears, bottom bracket, crankset and shifters to Shimano 105, put on a carbon seat post and new tyres. I tried to replicate the position of the Planet X to make this an everyday training bike version to use without worry in poor conditions. I try to ride this every day, a little bit longer and further to regain my strength and fitness. I know it will be a long process but it's good to be able to cycle again! This one has hardly cost anything so in theory is disposable - although I would now really miss it!

The only modern bike I own at the moment would be Orłowski track bike from 2010. It was 1st place prize on PCMC (Polish Cycle Messenger Championship) held in Szczecin in 2010 It's build with Dura-Ace and NJS cockpit:

PS. I noticed that the saddle angle might seem a little bit off. In reality tho it's level and comfy, I think it could be slight sloping of the top tube and angle at which the photo has been taken that gave the impression of saddle being positioned badly.

My wife asked what it would take to get rid of six-seven bikes in our basement the other day.

I said simply, a Moots Routt 45.

I like your thinking-strategy

That's a very versatile bike, would love one myself but it's going to be a while before one shows up on the used market and I'm feeling impatient. Going to a Moots dealer next week to look around, GULP!

Nice Bike!
I really like the black and white paint job with the seatstay color change right at the rear tire.

Being new to the road scene, I ride mountain bikes for the majority of my time. In the first picture is my 2015 Trek Marlin 7 tucked behind my 2008 Kona Dawg. The Second picture is the Dawg at a local singletrack loop. I bought the Kona used on Craigslist and the previous owner had put a 160mm travel fork on the front. It's way overkill and makes the geometry a little wonky, but after throwing wide bars and a short stem on her, I love the way she feels.

It actually is a deep, deep metallic blue, not black. I guess photo don't give it full justice but if you look at the top tube on the 1st photo you can see it is blue. But no worries, most of my friends still believe it's black

I have yet to have the opportunity to have a modern bike in my bed. The only candidate at the moment is single and I haven't gone out enough with it to make such an assessment! Picked this up less than 6 months ago as a discard from parts being stolen from it.

Here's my only modern bike... and just finished building it up in the last few weeks. 2007 Habanero Classic.

You can see I'm still getting the fit dialed in (will need to get the steerer cut in the future). Not a weight weenie build at all, so there's things I can still do to lighten it, but it's about 19.5 lbs as you see it.

Got the frame as a factory refurb since it was too good a deal to pass up. I can't find any evidence of repairs. Beautiful welding job all around. I'd have liked to go with a black Campy set, but I got a cazy deal on this Ultegra set from a guy who was getting out of road cycling.

Red saddle and bar tape are in its future.

As long as it is steel or stainless steel or titanium. I am not against vintage aluminum or even newer aluminum (aluminum is a gift from the gods as is titanium) but carbon fiber, not forever, not sustainable, cannot be inspected, no thanks.

Love my Surly CC but for the stupid decals. My next newest bike after that is my 96 aluminum StumpJumper which is a superb ATB.

So I lucked into a Specialized Allez 40th Anniv. Ltd. Ed. frameset, designed by Mark DiNucci, built by Toyo. There's lotsa stuff about these online, basically Nooch started with a clean sheet of paper and let Spec'l pay for the tooling, lugs, tubes and fittings to build his vision of the best steel frame possible with today's technology. These were a limited edition of only 74 frames, but Mark got to keep the tooling, so he can build you a custom version even nicer.

I've barely got 50mi on it so far, but it does ride very nicely. I was doing some climbing on a club ride and the rear wheel just felt planted.

I had trouble getting the color right and fighting reflections outdoors, and I gotta whip the house into shape before the missus comes home from a biz trip, so the flickr album is a little abbreviated for the moment.

^^^^^Agreed!

Looks like Mr. DiNucci must have given them a little pep talk about thinning lugs too.

Wow.

Now that's a good looking bike.

Red never hurts either.

Full ride report please.

That's not a frameset for mere mortals like me. You lucky guy.

There's a tiny nick in the paint of the seat stay of that Specialized Allez 40th Anniversary Edition. Because I find such imperfection to be intolerable, I am willing to dispose of it for you - I'll even pay the shipping.

Ok, I've seen the modern bike I want.

You can log on to Raleigh's corporate website and buy there, the prices are slashed. See this thread:

https://www.bikeforums.net/general-cy...-bicycles.html

They have the Grand Vittesse for $1499.99. Reynolds 853, Ultegra, Clement Strada 28c's. 11-32 w/ long cage derailleur. Jensen has the same bike on sale for $500 more.

My Yeti 29'er is my most modern bike --- but - by endure style mountain bike standards - is already getting a bit long in the tooth -- 2 years old --- all around the finest , most versatile mtb I've ever ridden though (but I'm already thinking of how much I have to liquidate to procure one of the '17 full carbon models - the SB-5.5c ---- sadly which costs about as much as a new Honda CRF450 motocrosser )

Fittingly enough , -- pic taken at a crossroads - which is representative of where I feel my life is at the moment

'13 Cannondale Synapse 105 equipped and '05 Pinarello Opera, DA 7800 equipped - pic was taken as I was doing 3 mile hot laps to compare the 2 to see which was going to make the cut as my "daily driver" --- results were inconclusive -- admittedly the 'Dale is likely the more versatile bike, and just as fast, -- plus 2 lbs lighter with a scoshe more tire clearance , --- that makes it a clear cut winner right? Not really -- the Pinarello has some intangibles , so I still have both bikes

'01 or 02 Trek 5900 , DA 7700 equipped --- I don't know when these will make the transition to vintage bike status as its already 16 years old, --- but the bike is a rocketship still ---

My "big bike" -- '11 model --- the bike I spend the least amount of time on, but have the most fun when I do ----- its also already obsolete by MT standards as it has 26" wheels - -- don't care -- one of the last of YEti's true downhill rigs , and since its only used a handful weekends a year, I figure its got a few more years left in 'er - 26" wheels and all

Spring can't get here fast enough
