Have you met Iohan?

If you haven't met Iohan Gueorguiev, you need to. Be aware, he passed away recently at the tragically young age of 33, but the legacy he left behind has changed lives. All he did was ride his bike.

Go see this on YouTube; turn off the phone, grab some snacks and your favorite beverage, and hit autoplay.

Yeah, ive seen a couple videos and stories of him- really strong determination to plan and execute much of what he did.
Apparently sleep apnea was too much for him to take.

He started at the Arctic Ocean, and over the years rode south to Argentina by the most remote, rugged, and beautiful routes you can imagine, and met the most amazing people along the way, horses who wanted to eat his stuff, and dogs who wanted to come with him. He was wide open, humble, and kind; he made friends with farmers deep in the Andes, and soldiers on the borders; even gangsters in one memorable video. It was also fun watching him learn Spanish. The dude lived.

Absolutely not. He rode the entire Canol Road/Canol Heritage Trail in BC and Northwest Territories, a singular feat. Go do a WiKi about this trail, It's 500 miles long and about as remote a place as you can find in NA where you can ride a bike. Sometimes. You also need a packable inflatable raft. Others have done it as well and people have hiked it, but I think Iohan is the only person to bike it solo, which is an amazing accomplishment.

My memory of watching the YT on the Canol trip (possibly was a rider on a different YT) was he encountered 2 older men backpacking whom had just lost a 3rd companion, drowning and being washed downstream on a raging river. The man who died was carrying the sat phone and it was up to Iohan to race to town to call the Mounties. Nuts.

I guess you don’t realize that more good has been done for this planet through the use of automobiles in one hour than will ever be done by all bicycles/riders, all-time.

Nonsense

Range Rover or some such tried the Canol Heritage Trail in NW Territories. Failed. I think possibly ATV's have completed it but they had to raft the machines as the trail has been taken over by a river that a landslide turned into a lake. A few have biked it successfully, they too need a raft to complete.

Did his pursuits cause the insomnia and, consequentially, the suicide though?

What he’s done is amazing. But to me, it wouldn’t be worth my health. I love riding my bikes, but I love my family more……that’s the only thought that makes me hesitant to just dive in and kind of glorify it all.

He had sleep apnea, which caused the insomnia, and chronic sleep deprivation can seriously mess with your brain. I gather that extremely high altitudes can cause or exacerbate sleep apnea.

The biggest problem treating sleep apnea is most doctors don't know enough and employ a one size fits all approach and will only move off that position if the patient is failing the prescribed treatment. That is the most amazing thing. Not trying to treat the patient correctly from the start, but a treatment progression that occurs only after a patient fails, sometimes repeatedly, over a period of time.

Unless someone is well versed and understands the ins and outs of the system, which also includes battles with DMEs, and one has a very knowledgeable and caring doctor, getting the correct therapy can be nearly impossible. It is also a numbers game. If your numbers are within a compliant range, it doesn't matter how you really feel, you are pretty much stuck. This is exacerbated when insurance doesn't want to pay for more expensive therapy. Throw in insomnia and you are getting hit from both sides.

Those with the time, inclination, and ability to research and ask people who have answers on online forums while sleep deprived, "and" have the funds to buy the equipment without hoping to get approval from insurance have a chance to improve where very complex sleep disorders exist. If you don't, wearing a mask can make people more anxious which results in even less sleep, more insomnia, and more confusion in life.

John

Very true and easy to understand how such treatment was impossible for Iohan to obtain when he was always out on the extreme edges of civilization. He would have had to understand the issues, stopped his travelling, and returned to Canada to seek treatment. The cards were stacked against him, sadly. He will be missed.

Must be nice to not have or need a job/paycheck or a family to be responsible for and just be able to ride around the world on your bike alone.

I see he struggled with insomnia. I did for 25+ years and then I discovered kava and it was instantly cured.
