I'm a bit southeast of Auburn, so don't know all the local secrets of that area, but Mosquito ridge is one of the roads I do want to try one of these days. It's just outside of Foresthill and is an 18 mile climb with about 4500' of gain.

Thanks, photo opportunities abound in my local area. I ran a 11-40t cassette for the Death Ride...I was able to keep power levels down to a very manageable amount, but excessive heat made the ride more difficult than the climbing. I'm fairly well heat acclimated, but you can only do so much riding for 9 hours in 90/100s temps.

On my ride last Saturday, I took a route I was vaguely familiar with, having driven parts of it in my car and ridden most of it on a motorcycle years ago. I thought I was facing a steep climb for 3-4 miles at one point, but it turned out to be only a mile or so, followed by a really fun descent. The road was wide and smooth, good visibility, no gravel or debris, very little traffic... I was able to tuck in and just cruise effortlessly. I coasted at 40-42 MPH for about two miles. Then I turned onto another highway where I expected more descent and was not disappointed, although this one was not quite as steep. Of course, this whole time I was only withdrawing energy I had deposited in the bank while climbing for the first half of my loop route. I want to go back and ride this one again soon.

Last year there was quite the fire near Foresthill. Used to go up there to a restaurant for brunch with some mining motif. Have driven most of the roads in the area heading north, south and east toward Tahoe. There is a popular loop starting at Folsom and going up the south side of the Folsom river, crossing at 49 with that wonderful climb up down through Auburn and back. Mosquito Ridge sounds like a real challenge. Pick a cooler day and best of luck. PM me your Strava handle.
I think the loop through Folsom that you're talking about is probably up/over Salmon Falls to 49 and across the American River confluence. Either side of the confluence looks like a fun climb, but the traffic would be a bit unnerving on a bike. To eliminate 49, you could always expand the loop to Volcanoville and cross the river at the Mosquito bridge...eventually climbing up to Foresthill.

Got in 2 Rouvy routes tonight, 19.1 and 4.5K ft of gain and 12.4 and 140 ft of gain as a cool down. Did much better on the big climb than I did the other day. Avg grade was 5% versus much shorter distance that avg 8% that killed my legs.

Been there for sure. I got caught in one once where it started to hail on us, not like center of the country golf ball hail, but pea size stuff. We don't get a lot of hail in Florida, but it stung pretty good, so we pulled off to wait it out. We were at a church that has a large covered area near the side door, so as we hung out there, the lightning moved in and the steeple was struck and caught the church on fire. Luckily, they had a sprinkler system that saved the church from burning down and no one was hurt, but the noise that lightning made was unreal.

My first kinda difficult ride back after the 13k' of climbing Death Ride last week. My legs were actually good after that, but have been doing easier rides because of knee pain that developed after that. Only 32 miles on this ride, but with 4.5k' of climbing...with a 9 mile long climb, done at threshold effort.

45 miles climbing 2400’ on a mtb. Felt more like 65 riding on fat knobbies.

71.1 sweltering hot miles today. I started to roast at traffic lights, so altered my route to avoid having to wait for traffic signals and where I could just turn right added about a mile to my distance, but it was worth it.

31.5 miles with 1400’ at 16 ave. I was hunting fastest times on Strava segments for geriatrics so when I wasn’t going for it, I was resting. Managed 6 fastest segments which made my day.

Man what a most excellent ride today. A frigid 72 F on the Garmin. 28 miles on a 26 mile route. After two miles I had to turn around and backtrack. Then reroute. Road was closed from the storm last Saturday. After acclimating to the heat and high humidity it was chilly. R
