Oahu's last frame builder hanging it up

Maybe it's a thing all across the country (world?) but Oahu is losing its last frame builder and painter.

(excuse me if this belongs in the CL/bay thread.)

I refused to go down the rabbit hole of working out the value of the equipment, what it would take to store or set up, but damn I was tempted.

The seller (James / Modikoso) did some brazing work on a friend's Raleigh a few years ago, and then transitioned to only offer his paint services. He might be hanging up the whole thing.

The last on island to offer reliable brazing services for steel, titanium, and even did carbon work.

Bummers!

Side note - that is REALLY close to where I spent some years as a young lad terrorizing the streets on my Mongoose BMX bike.

I believe John Fitzgerald (Fitz Cycles) was building frames in Hawaii for awhile, but realized the market is very small, and shipping to and from the continental US was expensive. He now builds frames out of Santa Rosa, CA.

Can you imagine? How would it work unless you could leverage the marketing to make an upcharge? Hey, we made this in Hawaii, man. Maybe if you were doing bamboo bikes

Kona is less Hawaiian and more tiki bar, it seems

Yep... That's always been a killer. The old formula of "Cost of goods and transportation" is holding true. And how can you evaluate "Cost" when the value of currency changes from day to day. Here is the USA we are spoiled by having a stable currency even with an increasing inflation rate. I remember back in Italy in the 70's during the Gas Crisis. Transportation was the major factor in setting the worth of any Goods. I was stationed in Northern Italy and even there costs of Campagnolo parts could fluctuate as much as 25% from day to day...
