Once, at a "bike to work day" party thrown by the city, someone thieved a chain breaker, multitool, tube, and other bits from my seat bag.
how i know it was a cyclist: they left me one (of three) tire levers, my patch kit, a 5mm allen key, and the mini pump on the frame.
"i'll rob this dude, but if he flats, he'll still be ok (?!)"

- handlebars from my Schwinn Varsity (and the associated items - cut cables/housing, levers, bar tape, stem)
- Union bottle dynamo (they left the headlamp)
- all 4 wheel wingnuts from a low-end 10 speed that lacked QR hubs

- A set of wheels in my dumber days
- Lights once (Stupid)
- Cheapo MTB grips multiple times (WTF?)
I'm pretty careful now. I avoid locking my bike up in public if I have a safer option. Always use a U lock in combo with a cable. Bike chain around the saddle rails and seat stay.

When I was in Junior High I was in a 4-H bike club - everyone had to have a flag for club rides. I totally understand what the club supervisors were thinking - a bunch of kids on the road...having a flag makes sense, but it was really hard to convince friends to join knowing you had to have a giant flag on the back of your bike. So uncool.

Never really had anything stolen. Had a friend play a prank on me back in high school where he took my seat that had a QR. Then I found that someone had been picking at my bar wrap at my local college campus. However I always worry about my pedal straps being stolen since those are the only thing I leave on that can easily be stolen by hand.
Beyond that I'm too paranoid to leave easy to remove items on my bike while locked up.

Bizarre as this may sound: I was doing a solo century one day. I stopped at a convenience store to use the restroom and buy a drink. When I came out, the cheap plastic Cinelli bar plugs were missing.
