MTB frame that meets this criteria?
Hi guys,
I have a bit of a seemingly bizarre request. Does anyone know of a frame that meets this criteria:
Less than $300
Supports a front chainring size of 42 teeth
Horizontal sliding dropouts
I'm building a single speed mountain bike that I want to sort of act as a budget low end dirt jumper (for rather small urban jumps around my area.)
I've been looking and can't seem to find anything. The closest I got was the Octane Zircus One but unfortunately it only supports a chainring of up to 34T.
Many thanks.

The Octane Zircus 1 doesn’t have sliding dropouts. Or do you just mean horizontal?

Why not get a complete? Or another brand equivalent. They have 10t rear cogs so a 34t front is appropriate, seems way higher than 55" bmx gear.

Mountain bike frames and 42t chainrings don't go together. The short chainstays and wide tire clearance requirements of modern MTB frames, doesn't leave enough room for chainrings that large. I have built(welded together) a number of MTB frames and its always a challenge fitting the chainstay between the tire and the chainring. On the plus tire (3" tire clearance) frames that I build, a 32t chainring is the max. that will fit.
By the way, quality sliding or rocker dropouts cost me around $150, which is around the same cost as the rest of the frame tubes, head tube and bottom bracket. It would cost me over $300 in raw materials to build that frame and that doesn't include powder coating it or me making any money from it.

"Criteria" is a plural, therefore "...these criteria..," not "...this criteria..."
The singular is "criterion", i.e. "...this criterion..."
No Schoolhouse Rock for this one, maybe should have been "I'm just a criterion. Yes, I'm only a criterion, not a list or table..."

I honestly don’t know the difference between a 26” wheel dirt jumper vs a 26” BMX. Maybe wheelbase? I’m not sure either of them are bikes you would ride any distance at speed.
42t chainring on a 26er was the standard outer ring on mtb’s decades ago. Unfortunately the geometry will probably be less than ideal. But if you can run a chainline off an outer ring using an older triple, I would think you could get there. The biggest issue is the dropout width.
I’d probably look at 26” BMX frames and see how far outboard I could run the 14t cog.
dsaul is right about never finding/building a mtb, or dirt jumper, with a 42t because you will never clear the chainstay. You have to move the chainring out. Therein lies the chainline issue.

Looking at a few, the dj bike has a tighter rear triangle, suspension fork giving a lot of stack so it uses a flat bar, and a seat with no pretense you'll ever be sitting on it.
