Steerer tube, headset, and head tube questions. Thanks!

Hey! bike noob here. Trying to figure out the always confusing sizing specifications. I've never installed a threadless headset before and I'm trying to buy a new frame and fork for my latest project. What i found is head tubes come in basically two sizes 1 and 1-1/8" and forks and headsets as well.

Can you put in a 1" steerer tube fork into a 1-1/8" head tube? If this is even possible what size headset would you use, would you need some kind of shim for the steerer tube? Thanks alot!

Unless you already have a very nice 1" threadless fork and want to save some money, I would not bother adapting a 1" fork to a 1 1/8" frame. Reducer headsets and reducer adapters are available though. The former allows for not needing any adapters. The cups and bearings are adjusted to accomodate the smaller fork in the larger head tube. The latter allow you to use a standard 1" headset in a 1 1/8" head tube.

I have a 1 1/4 headtube in my Cannondale MTB, and 1 1/8 aftermarket suspension fork, with a 1 1/4 to 1 1/8 reducer pressed into the headtube. No problems so far...
