Only 1 mile to go...
Looks like the Great Allegheny Passage is almost done. 335 miles from Pittsburgh to DC. I have been wanting to ride this for a couple of years but can never get the 4-5 days to fit it in my schedule.

I dunno, we stayed at a Super 8 in Cumberland a few weeks a go and it was $90. Granted it was a Saturday, but $90 for a Super 8! Highway robbery, it was.

Shoot - I paid about the same for the nicer hotel right on the trail! Though it was midweek and October, so I dunno.

Now that this thing is almost done, I may have to make my triumphant return and ride it end to end.

In 2008 Neil Fein and I sat out a rainstorm at the Eastern Continental Divide with a guy riding the whole thing in two days. We remember it because when Neil F. asked what he did, the guy said he had a "job he can't talk about." The mysterious cyclist didn't know the trail at all; he was surprised he had the downhill run into Cumberland ahead of him.

Please don't plant crazy ideas like that in my head. That's like slapping me in the face with glove...

Can you ride this trail on a road bike with 23mm tires or do you need a hybrid/mtn bike?

The GAP, maybe. The C&O, well... I sure as hell wouldn't. It's significantly rougher and tends to get deep mud ruts if it rains.

Yes. Follow the lakeshore to Erie, PA, and then take PA Bike Route A south to just outside Pittsburgh. Then switch to the Montour Trail at Coreapolis, follow that to Clairton/Glassport, and follow the on-road Steel Valley Trail to the GAP.
