school me on 7400 dura ace QR skewers
Just came across these and I wasn't aware dura ace made 7400ish skewers with the black lettering. All of the NOS and used ones I own and have seen do not have the black lettering. Did this guy just do the black lettering himself? Its pretty worn down on the rear one so it must have been done back when they were new.

Like many of the 7400 parts, the lettering was engraved and filled in with black paint. I don’t recall the QRs being filled in with black like the other parts, but if not factory, it could have easily been done at home. They look sharp.
Except for being made of steel, these are my favorite QRs because of their blind end on the cam housing.

Agreed. I don't believe the 7400 skewers came with paint fill. I like the look of the black letters on yours. I did a 740X build with blue accents, and I decided to use blue paint to fill in the engraved letters (skewers, hubs, seat post, brake and shift levers). Easy to do and should be easy to remove with some paint solvent and a brush/scrubber.
+1, great skewers. Beyond the clean lines, they feel as secure as any skewer I've used.

Also “renewed” the lettering on 7400 and 600EX and Arabic stuff. Really does look nice, and I don’t compete for purist points. That’s beyond my patience level.

You never know what was done at the factory. For the past 37 years, I would have thought that the only cleat plates Shimano made for the PD-7400s were matte black anodized aluminum. Until I picked up a pair of chromed steel plates two weeks ago. It's absolutely possible the black-lined QRs came that way from the factory.
