Shimano 9s cassette on 11s hub…

Do I use just the 1.8mm spacer, or the 1mm in addition to it?

If the cassette tightens up on the hub, does it matter?

Make it tight, then set the U/L limits of the rear derailleur, and you'll be grand.

In other words:

Whatever combination works to get the cassette solid on the wheel means you can then set the limits, and you'll be alright.

Always willing to learn something new.

So... when the cassette tightens up on the hub, and the limits for the rear derailleur are set...

*What's the ******g problem?*

again wrong. need the 1.85 spacer for it to be solid and work there is not enough threading on the lock ring to make up the difference to get it solid

it won't tighten on the hub...there is limited range of the lock ring. Which is why the spacer is provided.

So if it won't tighten the cassette on the hub, all bets are off. Fair enough, then obviously you need more spacer!

It's not rocket science. Get the cassette tight on the hub, set the limits, and you're good to go.

Ok, here's the deal. Use a 1.8mm spacer AND if the cassette came with a spacer use that as well. If not, just the 1.8mm is all you need. There should be no 'try and see what happens. If you have what you say you have the only 2 options are both or just 1.8mm.

I have a 9sp cassette on the 11sp Ultegra hub. The hub came with the 1.85mm spacer to use with 10sp or 9sp cassettes. That's what you need.

Do it once, do it right. No need to be a goathead.

Thanks, guys. It turned out in my case (Ultegra 6800 hub and unknown Shimano 9s cassette) that only the 1.85 was necessary.

I asked because there wasn’t any “came with.” Both parts were used. I’ve put together stuff like this before, but wasn’t sure.

FWIW; If guessing is your style, you could slide the cassette onto the hub, tighten the lock ring & measure the end play with what works for obtaining the spacer needed to take the up gap. You might end up trying a few spacers before finding the right amount of thickness needed, but that should help in finding the spacer thickness needed.
