Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hell on Wheels/Overcoming

Has anyone seen either the Hell on Wheels DVD featuring the T-Mobile Team or the Overcoming DVD featuring the CSC team? Any thoughts on the quality of these movies or any other really good cycling documentaries that you would recommend?

Thanks,

J

i got hell on wheels for christmas and i loved it. its all subtitles so if you dont like reading your outa luck, but overcoming is mostly sub titles too. Hell on Wheels gave me a great appreciation for erik zabel. and for the tmobile team because it chronicles the 2003 tour de france when jan ulrich was on the bianchi squad. also it is one of the first tour documentaries that doesnt completely center on lance, and that is very refreshing

i havent seen overcoming but some people have said it was over hyped and not that good.

Do a search. There are threads on each of these movies (possibly more than one each).

I have both and LOVE them. Great insight into the inner workings of T-Mobile and CSC albeit Jan was on Bianchi when HoW was filmed.

I really enjoyed it. It's understated. Typical Euro-style. Like PK, it made me respect Zabel more than I did before. The T-Mobile maseusse was fascinating to me because on the surface, he seemed to be an unemotional stoic German, but the film captured his deep care and concern for the riders.

Hell on Wheels better than Overcoming.

Also recommend A Sunday in Hell.

Thanks,

Agree with Euro, I have both (WCP offered "Hell" at a discount when I bought "Overcoming") and enjoyed "Hell on Wheels" more...it was bascially a camera in the action and not much more.
Overcoming was too much production...but if you are stuck inside on a winter's afternoon, there's good stuff in each.

The best part of "Overcoming" is where Riis hits Julich with the mirror of the car in stage 13, when Bobby's getting water bottles, and the subsequent conversation between Riis and Julich. That was priceless...

Jens is da' man! Yeah I've watched Overcoming about 6 times now, the bonus features are really good and nearly as long as the movie. What I liked about Overcoming, and something others have criticized, is that it's movie about a bike racing team not about a bike race. The production value is very high and the movie feels more like a feature film than a documentary.

The parts about Jens are great. He has gained a fan in me.

I wish there was more race strategy coverage, but the managing personalities part was interesting.

Has anybody found these for rent anywhere? Put another way, is there any movie rental place that's good in particular for bike race films/videos?

Netflix has Hell on Wheels, but not Overcoming or very many other road race DVDs. Some local bike shops rent them.
