I think about this sometimes. What would I buy if I had the money to spend on a new car? I really don't know, maybe a pick-up. You've heard about the fastest way to ruin a hobby? Make it your job.
I've driven the supercharged Vettes and Camaros. I wonder why someone would want that. I've owned beaters for a long time and I'm ok with them.
I sometimes have the desire to get an old clunker and work on it. I still might do it one of these days. Or not.

Going back to what I said about old cars not having been built to last 50 or 60 years, I'd contrast that with watches, which were built to last for decades. The forces are a lot smaller, the tolerances are tighter, and they're not as exposed to the elements, but the same things that make them more accurate also make them last longer. They also don't deteriorate as much from lack of use.

I have a soft spot for old cars. Really, I do. But they aren't even close to as good as modern cars. I've gone on long road trips with a tool box in the trunk so I could re torque the head bolts and set the valve clearance, along with setting the dwell.
I miss that like I miss having whooping cough.

Anyway, bro-in-law is a Ford guy in particular -- he'd display that 'I'd rather push a Ford than drive a Chevy' bumper sticker 'cept he'd never desecrate his beloved current F-150 with such a thing. So, he found and purchased the shell/remains of what is I think the first F-150, and is slowly restoring the thing from the wheels up. He has restored the frame himself, sent the engine/transmission out to some outfit in the 'states for a complete re-build, sourced body panels where needed from all over the place, etc. etc. etc. Still thinks he's about two years away from getting it on the road, but he'll get there. He's a great guy, and has the means and the skills to complete the project.

Last month, I was finding myself slightly obsessed with two different bikes on FB Marketplace. One was a Battaglin, same era as Dreadnought, but with normal tubing. 7 speed 105 with DT shifters. Only $300! Another was a 1989 Centurion Ironman Master. 7 speed Tricolor 600 with DT shifters. Both 58s, so right in my ballpark. I already have a Battaglin, and I already have an Ironman, and I love both of them. So, why was I obsessing on them? Who knows? Not me, that's for sure.
Anyway, I didn't take any action on either, and the feeling faded.
What I did do - FINALLY!! - was deal with my Schwinn Circuit problem. It's been 3 frames, 2 forks, 2 headsets, and a box of bits for too long. Wednesday I took two frames and a fork to Dale Saso, a framebuilder in San Jose, to make the 24" frame's fork fit the 23" frame. When it's done, I'll be able to build the 23" 1989 Schwinn Circuit I've been wanting since I got the 22" one back in 2021. No more low back ache from too much bar drop.

I had an MG Midget and I carried a large screw driver to pry disc brake calipers apart, smaller screw driver and small wrench to adjust the twin carbs, WD40 to spray ignition parts, emery paper to polish lighting wiring and a few other small tools. Never drove anywhere without them and I mean anywhere.
My dad said that he could replace a clutch in a '39 Ford on the shoulder of the road. Before my time but if he said that he did, I believe him.

I think you could have reduced the entire rant that triggered your rant into either "Everything used to be better!". or perhaps more succinctly, "Old man yells at cloud"

Went to the local LBS yesterday to pick up a small item I needed. Ended up trying out a bike they had in my size, and really liked it. Now I’m obsessing.
I need help.

Velo Vol I saw a car today on my ride that had a specialty Tennessee Vols license plate. I stopped and was going to take a pic but when I pulled my phone out, a guy in the yard that I hadn't noticed, asked me what I was doing. I told him that I was just checking my phone for a sec and then put it away.
Probably.

65 miles in the foothills today.
Fun and pretty route but definitely backloaded on the climbing.

Nice day of cruising around at subsonic speeds. Scored a couple of tennis balls. Throwing your tennis racket over the fence should be more popular, cuz now I need one of those, or maybe a dog. Nah, tennis racket upkeep is cheaper.
