Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road Cyclists Wearing Knee Socks

I've seen a couple of male road cyclists wearing white knee socks lately. Those should be left to the waitresses at the Tilted Kilt....

don't care. If you HAVE to do that, wear black. Not your daughters socks.

Agreed. I'm a duathlete and wouldn't be caught dead with white socks on.

Yea, like they really look worse than any of the rest of the gear that roadies wear. Please!

this is one of those "it's warm enough to wear shorts in California and you're freezing" posts in disguise, isn't it?

Back in the '70s, Freds wore sansabelt shorts and knee high gym socks. Things haven't changed so much, have they?

Knee socks have their place and I have some black Nike (soccer) socks I throw in my kit in case I have to deal with weather changes where warmer legs can make a big difference in ride comfort.

I also have some very colorful knee socks that would go good with my kilt when I ride in that... but no white ones.

Most roadies have far superior legs than my waitress at the 'Kilt last time. Too bad the socks didnt cover up the thumb bruises on her thighs... I still wouldnt wear them though.

I have a set of white 2XU "Race" socks and two pair of black 2XU "recovery" socks. I wear the black ones often after a hard ride.
I used to wear the white ones during rides. I actually think they helped a bit but the compression made my toes cold on the road.

Fredly or not, I think they actually make a difference.

You actually wear those in public? Has your wife seen you wearing them?

These definitely have made a difference for some chronic calf tightness when worn as recovery. As best I can tell, there is moderately positive evidence for compression for recovery but virtually no evidence that it is beneficial during performance. That is, there are a good number of no difference studies and a couple of negative effect studies in addition to the few that show a benefit. So overall, nothing.

So I wear them in the privacy of my home or while lecturing at the U, hidden discretely under my jeans.

Keep your calves and ankles warm and you will have happier feet... in hot weather I wear sandals with my kilt as there is no need for socks... either.

Interesting, we have the "Crooked" Kilt here. I wonder if they are related?

On really cold (for NorCal) rides I wear them with knickers to keep my shins warm. Otherwise, no thanks.

lol. Then you should upgrade to carbon ones - that'll save you at least 500 grams.

I say you need to ride these freaks down and point out the error of his ways to them.

You can out ride these infidels, can't you?

The fact that you care what other men are wearing is a little weird...

The fact that you logged into BF and started a thread about it.... also a little weird...
