Agree and for your intended "using this as a gravel/commuter bike" this bike is way overkill especially given the classic rarity factor. This bike was a good as they get for the era and could be used for much more challenging use cases given you have the cardio, legs and skills.

Thanks! Will measure rear dropout when I see the bike. What are standard spacings for rear and front dropouts on MTB? I'm used to working on vintage steel road bikes.
Will probably look to get new 27.5" wheels then if they fit the frame and save of wheelset and components.
As for the 3x, Iaure it might work great but I never liked 3x, not even 20 yeara ago. 2x works but then again I might just go 1x and reduce the added complexity and maintanece that comes with having an fd .

There are plenty of 26" wheelsets available - you don't have to change to 27.5. Check out Velomine.

You'll be giving up way to much top speed going 1X. Stick to the triple. I've got 3 vintage mtb's I ride pavement with, I'm almost always in the big ring, you'll be the same assuming you like a good pace. 1x can't do that, or if you go big ring 1X you'll be stuffed climbing steep hills when your legs are shredded. Keep it 3x6 and only modify to make it comfortable.

A 1x11 with a 11-46 cassette has more range than a 3x6 with 22/32/42 crank and 14-28 freewheel,
In the off chance that the freewheel is 14-34 (megarange) it can be matched with a 11-51 cassette.
