How about a 50th anniversary heritage set with a re-manufacture of one of their better old systems with some extra bling and more modern materials? I know it would only appeal to old duffers with more money than sense to put on their high end vintage display frames but it would generate publicity and perhaps some income.

I think it's understood, but just to clarify--2023 would have been Dura Ace's 50th Anniversary, not Shimano, which is much older (founded 1921--so that anniversary was missed as tool).

But as others have mentioned, today's Dura Ace isn't 1998's. Besides, they're a year late. No one wants "50th anniversary" parts issued a year after the anniversary. Better wait another 24 years and see what they can come up with on the 75th anniversary. But if trends continue, I don't see them producing anything that could remotely be considered "eye candy" the same way the 25th anniversary group was. I guess those days are long gone.

I guess it's just me. I perform fit and function over appearance. And realistically would prefer black components over shiny bits considering how dirty things get.

It’s not just you. It’s the market in general. If everyone still preferred shiny bits then that’s what they would be producing.

To me, appearance is part and parcel of fit and function. A higher-quality finish is an indicator of precision to me.
And I would think black would show dirt far more readily than silver (which is why my grandfather always opted for silver cars--could go for longer periods between washings).

One of the reasons you don't see shiny bits on lots of things anymore is because of environmental concerns. The shiny chrome process is not friendly to the environment.

As for the imaginary 50th group, would that group be a plug and play with most any bike of the time era? Or, would you have to buy more parts to make it work?

Offer a seatpost, stem and hubs for older bikes; modern cranks and electronic shifters for newer bikes, but make all the parts share a common design aesthetic, common logos, etc.

You are guessing. You don't know that. Nobody knows why Shimano didn't release a 50th anniversary Dura Ace. All we are saying is that it's a missed opportunity for the company.
