Specialized Globe Vienna 3 disc rebuild/modify
Hey everyone,
I'm just about finished with my latest project so I thought I would share. I have a Ridley Noah RS that I converted to a flat bar as my fitness/go fast bike but I wanted an additional bike for just riding around the neighborhood, hitting the coffee shop, or the market to pick up milk. I spent a ton of time looking around trying to find the perfect bike. I wanted something with a little bigger tires and something a little more rugged that I could abuse and not be too concerned about jumping off a curb and trashing my expensive wheelset on the Ridley. Also on the list was a bike with disc brakes so I could ride it in any kind of weather and still manage to stop.
After a few weeks of looking around for the right deal...... enter the 2009 Specialized Globe Vienna 3 disc. I found this beauty listed on my local Craig's List. The asking price was a very fair $250 which I was more than willing to pay. Well...... at least until I actually saw the bike! The ad stated it was in "excellent condition" which turned out to mean it was completely trashed. The paint was all chipped from having a U-lock hanging off of it and the bike didn't shift correctly and when I grabbed a handfull of brakes to try and stop while test riding it, the bike actually laughed at me.
Anyway, I ended up getting it very cheap so I decided to completely overhaul it. Here is the photo that the seller emailed me. I know it's difficult to tell from this photo, but trust me when I tell you it was beat.
The bike went through a complete transformation with all new parts and a very cool new finish. Because I wanted the bike to be durable, I sanded down the entire frame and fork and coated it with truck bed liner. The result looks very cool and it should be pretty much bomb proof.
Here is a list of the components I used:
Mavic Crossride 29er wheels
Specialized "The Captian" 34c tires
Specialized Riva saddle
Specialized BG grips
Shimano XT hydraulic disc brakes
Shimano XT rear shifter
Shimano XT shadow rear derailleur
SRAM RED cassette
FSA headset
FSA Gossamer crankset-converted to single chain ring
Rotor Q-Ring 38t chain ring
Ritchey UD carbon 70mm stem
Ritchey UD carbon flatbar (coming soon)
Other than the frame and fork, the only other components I used from the original bike were the Avid brake rotors. They are being replaced as soon as I figure out what I want to replace them with.
When complete, the bike will weigh just under 21 Lbs. That is quite a feat considering it was 29.2 Lbs when I bought it.
Here is a photo of it in it's current state. I have the rest of the components to finish it. I just haven't had the time to install them. I will get to it tonight or tomorrow and get some better updated photos of the bike completed.
Let me know what you think!
UPDATE... Here are the photos of it completed

Truck bed liner ? Why ? isn't the point of that stuff to be abrasive?
Powder coat would be durable enough and a Nice Finish.
As Would Catalyzed Liquid paint Like Imron..
I lost skin off my Knuckles, to a brief contact with spray in bed liner in a friend's truck,
who was helping me Move. .
Disc Dual Drive Hub in back would be My build list change .. it may be flatter where you live.. ..

I don't think truck bed liner is so much abrasive as it is non-skid. Well, at least not the kind I used. I just went to Auto Zone and bought a rattle can of the stuff. I have used it for other things as well with very good results. The commercial grade stuff that is applied at detail/accessorie shops may be a bit more abrasive but this isn't that bad. Also, it looks mean as hell!
Powder coat is very durable as well but I wanted to do it myself rather than paying someone to do it. It's not about the cost, it's more about personal satisfaction.
As far as the weight, it will b as previously stated. I have weighed the bike as it is in the photo and also weighed the remaining parts so I'm pretty accurate on the finished weight.

I'll burn my first post here at BF to say I like it! The bedliner coating is unique and I hope you like it in the long run. Nice components and lots of time invested for a "beater" too. lol
When posting your forthcoming images, some close ups of the components would be cool.
And yes, some folks idea of condition is not even on the same dial as mine.
Neat build and thanks for posting.

Love what you did. I have the same bike in beige and want to do something similar. I want to go 2x10 and create a straight bar gravel grinder. Did you ever get a final weight, I see you were shooting for <21 lbs.
