Not uncommon. Immune system gets whacked hard in some people when they get to a fatigue/body fat level. And most people keep training through the first signs because if the take a day off, they will lose 6 months of fitness (rolling eyes here).
When I would do "super skinny train" mode for stuff like Gila I'd really watch the diet, sleep, and hygiene. Plus I worked from home so I could limit my exposure to big groups of people.
Have him go full stop and rest till the TT. My 2 cents. Do the TT then go home and rest some more. Fingers crossed that he gets better.

I read something on FB not too long ago with a similar discussion about training in the rain during the winter. The argument was, sure, you are getting your training in, but you're also ingesting a ton of crap, in terms of road spray and other stuff, that could lead to illness. The point was you might be better off spending the day on the trainer or just skipping a workout.

Eh, that's a tough call. I think the hardest parts are how mentally taxing it is to be even colder and more soaked than usual, and cleaning your bike afterward is a real pain in the ass.
The fat thing is real, if I drop another couple of pounds I get sick, or at least so run down that it feels nearly indistinguishable. This is with being able to work from home.

Yeah, that's why I'm so fat...so I won't get sick. It's a planned thing, not just that I like sweet and salty things too much for my own good.

Finally dumped comcast. We seem to get dropped internet at least once a week, and it was especially bad this past Friday. Their tech support is next to useless. Signed up for fios online Friday, and it was setup first thing Monday morning. Although I'm not much of a tv watcher, we apparently get some cable channels with the local tv (espn, nbc sports, cnn, etc. a lot of the basic cable stuff). $68/month for the package, cheaper and better than comcast.

We've been with RCN since we moved out to the southern neighborhoods. Internet service only, no cable TV. We could only get Comcast before, when we were in a 1930's tenement building in Brighton. The service is better in absolutely every way. Go figure.

But I have yearly, semi-yearly tourist experience there. Running, riding and driving as my son rides. GG park is OK, but not the best access from the city unless you ride around. If you go through the city you have Haight-Ashbury, but really a bunch of traffic.
So, if it is SFO you want here is my suggestion.
Starting about fishermen's warf head to the GG bridge, marina district, Presidio - then you have to decide if you want to be tourist or not. Go over GG bridge and head to Mt Tam. Really a lot of traffic there, but memorable.
Alternatively you can just head down Hwy 1, but if it were the summer you would be mist drenched. You can hit GGP, or keep going.
Best riding is in the hills S of SFO. Again - the local would know best.

Thanks. I don't have a car, so it's gotta start/end from downtown SF. And it's mostly an endurance ride with 6-8 30-45sec max efforts (since I'm not riding with a power meter). ...and apparently if I feel good I should go hurt myself on some hills.

Then if dry Hwy 1 - unless the local tells you different. Spend some map time. GGP to me is not a real good workout route itself, but going round it might be good.
I have ridden Hwy 1. And followed junior in the car on Tam. Just a lot of traffic on the way to Mt Tamalpais. So why the ride up is great, it is less than ideal getting there, unless you think riding your bike over the GG bridge is epic - which it is.

riding up there kind of sucks. It'll be nicer on a weekday though. Be careful on the GGB, it's a death trap.

+1 on avoiding the golden gate bridge. most of them are tourists who rent bikes, but have no idea how to ride them. people taking pictures of the bay, with total lack of awareness. sometimes, they separate the traffic between cyclists and pedestrians, on separate sides, which helps some.
marin county is nice. berkeley is nice too. easy access via bart
first few videos are in SF.

Welp, time to save up for a bike.
Girl and I broke up so I'm single again. One daughter moved out to be an adult. The other rarely home since she's all teenagery and independent. Most of my saturdays are yard work and house stuff. Then a lot of free time. So .... Time to start putting money away for a cheap bike and gear.

Cannondale lifetime warranty ftw!
I brought my Six13 into the LBS after my CAAD12 came in so we could transfer the fit measurements over and after they looked at the bike they had the rep come in. The bottom bracket paint is really bad, there is some sort of corrosion going on under the paint, so that's what the rep came in to look at but when he was in he noticed cracks forming in the paint at the carbon/aluminum joints. He said cannondale wouldn't do anything about the bottom bracket (he scraped some away and the aluminum was pretty much perfect underneath) but he would submit a claim for the cracks.
Got a call from the owner of the LBS yesterday. Cannondale wanted proof of purchase.
Im sure they weren't expecting to have to give me a frame, but I saved the receipt..from 7 years ago. They are sending me a CAAD10.

It isn't the corrosion they are warrantying, it is the cracks in the paint at the carbon/aluminum joints in the top tube and down tube. My LBS told them if they wouldn't warranty it that I wanted proof, in writing, that the bike was 100% safe to ride at no point would fail.
