Cold weather: Where do you draw the line?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

All this talk about manning up for winter riding and I'm contemplating putting my jacket on in the office b/c of the air conditioning.

What I want to know is who the 6 people that voted 60F and under are?

Are you kidding me?!

Why ride a bike when you can take up indoor shuffleboarding...

I'll put on a sweater in the office but ride in the 30 degree NY winters. I stopped trying to figure it out...

The funny thing is that cars give me tons of room in winter. Maybe they figure that anyone crazy enough to ride in conditions like that, is likely to go postal & do heaven-knows-what to them...

The poll means nothing.
It only been -10 or so this week but there is to much snow and ice to ride.
Riding is done for this year. Ay least in Saskatchewan.......

Traffic does tend to give you lots of room in those conditions. I figure they are either terrified that I'm going to suddenly slip under their wheels or that I'm completely nuts.

OK, warm weather folks ....... it is +11C (52F) inside my house today, and colder outside. If a person can sit at a computer at these temperatures, a person can ride a bicycle. In fact, if I had a trainer I'd be on it because it would probably warm me up!!

The absolute coldest I've ridden was -14(f) unintentional, ride took longer than expected.

For the most part it varies with the season, in the summer when it's been 90+, and it drops to the 50s, it's too cold to ride. In the winter, when it's been mid 30s, and drops to the teens, you just throw on an extra layer.
During the summer, 50 means you grab a jacket, in the winter if it hits 50, you'll be outside in a t-shirt, so I guess it's depends on how big the change is from what you're used to.

Ken.

well I got my first cold test on Monday, it was 48 degrees with 10 mph head winds. I thought it was fairly cold, but not unbareable, but with wind hitting your joints fingers, toes, it gets cold, but my core and quads were fine, extremities got the chill thou. All in all 40's are fine for me, next is 30's

Where I live, we don't get temps below 10. Teens are uncommon but I ride in that. I'd like to say I stay out so long as the roads are clear, but changing tires when it's below 10 doesn't sound fun.

It isn't. Especially when it is dark, your spare tube has a hole, and you overheat and then freeze.
That was a fun ride to work. I was shivering too much to patch the tube so I pumped up my flatting tire every few miles and then sprinted to the next point.

I draw the line when I end up feeling like an ice cube during or after the ride. This comes after becoming so cold that I bordered or even experienced hypothermia.

48F is my cutoff. That's the temperature where my open finger gloves let me know what time of the year it is. I'm not one of those people who will happily dress for antarctic condition 1

living in FL all my life, never really gotten to ride in temps below 26, but if I had the right clothes, I'd get myself out when I thought about how not fun the trainer is

I only ride when the weather is between 60-70 degrees and when the wind is below 10mph.
