Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Deuces Wild?

When you've been cycling for as long as I have, you think you've seen everything. But this weekend I saw something I have never seen before.

I was riding in a rural section of Florida and saw something in the road of which I wasn't quite sure, but appeared to be drawing a lot of attention from flies. When I got close I saw what is: a turd about a foot long.

It was neatly laid out in a line. I rode away but of course couldn't help thinking about it. Ok, who does this? Who decides this is the place to lay a turd, drops trou, and squeezes one out in a nice straight line? I suppose you had to walk slightly to do this, who thinks to do this?

Anyway, discuss other odd things found in or by the road, if you like.

A few weeks ago, I was riding out in the boonies and saw something sticking straight-up in the road - on the yellow line. When I got closer, I saw it was a raccoon that was as flat as a pancake, but whose tail was pointing straight to the sky. Kinda like a cartoon. Not as good as your story though.

I saw a bra on the side of the road the other day, now that you mention that.

A Floridian. Perhaps, Flo Rida.

Thinking more about things I found by the side of the road, I once found a box of tools. I rode home, drove my car back, picked them up, and tried to determine ownership. When I couldn't determine that, I put an ad in the paper (an attorney friend's advice). No one claimed them, and I still have the tools and still use them. Just a lot of wrenches, some chisels, and a ratchet set.

One time on an MS ride, I saw a 2-foot long dead gator. It even had its arm across its chest, like it expired with a drama-filled fury.

This morning on the way in from the bike path into midtown, I saw a guy leaning over his bike. Homeless looking guy. I thought I'd be friendly and ask if he needed help with his bike. As I got closer, I saw that he wasn't fixing a flat, he was puking all over the side of the path. I just kept going.

(No, it didn't appear to be any medical emergency, just a guy having trouble keeping down his liquid breakfast.)

A few years ago I was waiting for the light to change so I could hit the freeway, a truck pulled up next to me. When the light changed he gunned it, when he did a bunch of tools, a couple tool boxes and some construction materials slid out of his truck into the road. I pulled out of the turn lane, and chased him down, honked the horn got beside him and tried to let him know he dropped the stuff, first time he waved his hand like 'go away leave me alone', Then I got up closer and pointed toward the back and yelled that he lost his crap, he flipped me off (got me mad) so I got beside him again and again yelled that he'd dropped his crap. He yelled out f-off, flipped me the bird and gunned it.
So I went back and picked up the tools and moved the materials out of the lane.
I almost felt bad about it at first, but then figured that I had done everything I could to let him know he dropped them so I stopped feeling bad. They were some pretty decent tools, most of which I could use since I'm in construction too, saws tapes levels and other construction stuff.
I know he got wherever he was going, noticed his crap was gone, went back looking for it, found the materials and figured out exactly what I was trying to tell him.

Ken.

Maybe that's what happened here.
