Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

building my '83 trek 400 as a fixed gear

I picked this up off craigslist in my area for $50, I'm going to convert it to single speed/fixed gear and I have a few questions:

I'm going to strip/paint it myself, and there are a few rust spots. I'm thinking since I want an even coat, I should strip the whole frame with chemical stripper, then sand down the rusted spots, anything wrong with this idea?

Does anyone know what size BB I need that will fit and give me a 42mm chainline?

Does anyone have any experience with these bikes? It's mangaloy 2001 tubing

Most old treks were painted with Imron (or something like that, I can't remember exactly), point being, it lasts forever, and is incredibly durable. Unless you want it powder coated, it seems a shame to sand off a truly bad-ass paint and rattlecan something on that will flake off. Unless you have a compelling reason, I'd keep the paint the way it is.

Most road cranks use a 41mm chainline for the inner ring, so just use your preferred chainring in the inner position, the 1mm doesn't make much of a difference.

And thank you for saving that nice old bike from the abuse it's obviously been through.

I want to clean up the rust spots, and there are alot of chipped off spots in the paint, so I figured I'd just clean it up and redo the whole paintjob.

I won't. All I'm changing is the paint job.

oh and I'm going to use a threaded/threadless adapter so I can use a threadless stem

You might want to replace that tractor seat as well. I can't imagine it would be very comfortable.
