I love looking vintage bikes and the colors jump out at me. I have a feeling that these are 80s and 90s color schemes but which years did these paint jobs graduate from just colorful to psychedelic?

'86 thru '95 is a 10 year period where brands went wild with color. Large, mid, and small brands were goin nuts with fades, smoke, splatter, and four.
Univega and GT splatters.
Centurion Ironman smoke fades.
Klein multicolor fades.
trek fluorescent aluminum road bikes.
Panasonic, Schwinn, and many more with fantastic fades of all sorts.
fade front to back.
fade top to bottom.
fade with the frame end points the same color and the frames middle another color.
this doesnt even begin to address the wild Colnago airbrushing.
such great color goodness.
some examples- both mine and off the internet...

Yep, I was a teen in the late 80s and got into mountain bikes along with my friends, and the paint jobs were as much a talking point as the groupsets.
Whether they be the Raleigh Mustang and Lizard, Diamond Back Topanga and Sorrento, Marins with their contrasting florescent fork/stem over stone mainframe, stripey pink Peugeots and neon fade MBKs..
The last bike I bought, this year, was a '91 GT Quatrefoil with an acid splatter.
Bold paint was a must-have.

Ditto, the late 1980s-early '90s splattertastic Univegas like my Via Carisma, and the fade paint Centurion Ironman. Kooky stuff. I love 'em.

Colnago has been on this consistently since the 80's.... I recall building a bike for a guy years ago who handed us a picture of a rainbow trout as the template for his paint. It wasn't bad...just, different.

I also like a lot of 90s Lemonds...is this paint job original with the contrasting panel or has it been done before?

Mid-‘80’s. I had a Bertoni Corsa Mondiale is a metallic lavendar. The only information I could find on it was the italian name which translated to “God Awful Purple”. It also came in Electric Rose which was a salmon pink that turned blueish in certain angles. Of course I always wanted the Centurian Dave Scott Ironman. I still see a lot of them around the bay area today. It came in purple and gold, pink and white and, I think, blue and gold (or pink?)
I also had a GT Karakoram in a black and white crackle finish.
The ‘80’s had bike color schemes that rivaled our hairstyles at the time when in comes to questionable taste. Still miss the Bertoni, though. It was a great bike.

Wasn't there a year or two in the 90s when fluorescent paints were all the rage?

I rocked a '92 GT Performer as a kid- neon yellow with black splatter. Killer!
The Trek 1200 from 1991 was a harsh ride and not too easy on the eyes.

The bikes below were what I used as inspiration/reference when deciding the paint on my handbuilt frame(the orange and white fade earlier in the thread).

My Master and C60 fall into the wild side. My C59, however, is pretty conservative.
