Need advise on 2016 Cannondale Catalyst 2

Hi Fellow bikers. I'm mainly a road bike type however I'm planning to venture into the mountain bike (hardtail) scene. My current road bike (2017 CUBE attain) is not suited for hard trails thus I plan to buy used for now & eventually upgrade if necessary.

I came across a 2016 Cannondale Catalyst 2 in my local ads which I can purchase for 300$ cdn. It appears the MSRP in 2016 was roughly 700$ + tx so i guess It's a good deal as the bike is hardly used.

The problem is that I'm not familiar with mountain bikes. Does anybody own a Catalyst 2 or is anyone familiar with this model? Is this model recommended for beginners? Other suggestions would be appreciated.

Some of the features include the following.

Frame: Aluminium 6061
Fork: SR Suntour XCT 100mm
Front Derailleur: Shimano Altus
Rear derailleur: Shimano Acera 9 speed
Shifter: Shimano rapidfire plus
Breaks: Promax hydraulic brakes

Thx

It is nothing special but it is fine for a beginner and the price is good. All beginner level hardtails are all pretty much the same no matter whose stickers are on the frame. Yeah the drivetrain or brakes my be a step up or down but there isn't really much difference in the real world until you step up to something with an air fork.
