Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

tell us your ideal road area you like to ride on

What is your favourite type of road area to bike?

Here in our area. We have many secondary highways that really only the locals travel on i ride often.

You can go for hours and see only 2 cars go by. So you almost have the road to yourself.

even on the main highways, the shoulders are so big that you have lots of space to ride and never have to scurry to the right for a big truck to go by.

so tell us your areas you like to ride? especially when you do long distance?

Freshly paved two-lane rural asphalt with a -1% grade and a 30mph tailwind. Heaven.

We have highways with wide paved shoulders, but they either have a lot of glass and rocks, or rumble strips (to warn drivers when they drift off). Great for not running over cyclists, but bad for riding, unless you need to replace your fillings.

-Mountains of north GA
-Around the hills of central FL like Mt. Dora or Clermont
-French Alps going through small rural villages and small towns
-Italian Country side. Preferably the northern lush and mountains or the more desolate and "primitive" southern part of the country
-Southern Portugal
-Spain

**not particular order and preferably with no cold weather to speak of, but not hot either. Mid 70's will do.

Las Sendas golfing community, ~1mi nice and steep, then ~1mi down, and back around. Do that till you have liquid for legs...then again we also have oak creek up by Flagstaff, some say that's nice too.

If I'm feeling sadistic, 10k+ feet elevation from base to peak with 10% minimum grade.
Otherwise, no wind on newly cemented two lane (one way) road with minimal/zero traffic.

Anywhere in the Santa Monica, San Gabriel, or Eastern Sierra mountains. Miles of climbs (and descents) with good scenery and little traffic.

The area west of Madison Wisconsin has thousands of miles with steep rolling hills, smooth pavement and almost no traffic. There are a few towns here and there for food & water. The Dairyland Dare challenge ride event and the Horribly Hilly Hundred are run in this area.

My favorite ride would be 60 to 100 miles of rolling steep hills. A 1 mile long hill steeper than 12% would be included every hour. I would do this every other day if retired.

Cycling along the coast in Chile. Beautiful, but very scary at times. Large trucks and narrow shoulders!

Back roads here in Montgomery County, MD, in what's known as the Agricultural Reserve. A few pics from a typical ride:
