Bought a groupset and new frame for a new bike build in 2024. I was saddened by how limited options were if you didn't want disc brakes. The industry is really hard set in telling customer what they can and can't use.

Also really impressed how out of control cycling prices are for the privilege of using disc brakes I don't want to use. Truly mind boggling so many people like this new trend in cycling. Overly complicated things to do simple function with extreme price tags.

Maybe buying a vintage frame from the early 1990's or early 2000's or having a custom made frame is much more interesting and offering you more options.

Yeah current road bikes are insane. It's mind boggling to read or hear about people buying "entry level" bikes that cost $5,000. Apparently that is the times we live now, $5,000 is an entry level bike now, it's filled with crap no one needs.

I'm guessing the current or new cyclists don't care about accessibility, ease of maintenance and being a home mechanic. The number of tools needed to install disc brakes and rotors is more than all the tools I need to build a mechanical bike with rim brakes alone. It's crazy. Watched a few build videos and the amount of time to install disc brakes in a internal routing takes longer than for me to build an entire bike! I've read some mechanics complaining it takes half a day to just do the disc brakes on new modern road bikes, that's crazy.

Somewhere along the way, I lost my chain whip.... as I can't believe someone would come and look in my toolbox and steal that. So I ordered a Park Tool Cassette Pliers to replace it versus building a new chain whip. I actually think I left it at my friends place when I was working on his bike, but he is out of town for work for the next 2 months and I don't feel like bothering his wife on looking for it in what he calls a garage, I call storage unit from hell. I've been wanting one of these, but just never bought it, so I decided why not.

I got a Bontrager Circuit helmet last weekend. Thought I’d try a Wave shell helmet and see jus how hot it gets this summer.

I have one of their WaveCel helmets, Specter I believe, and I did not find it was any more of less hot than the Bell that I replaced. It was a little heavier than the Bell, but otherwise, I love the magnetic strap clasp, how it keeps bees or other flying stinging insects out, and how it fits on my oddly shaped noggin. The only real complaint I have is not being able to itch my head without taking the helmet off as you no longer have access to the scalp through the vents. I would buy again.

Some super low quality plastic chrome tidbits for my fancy Italian bike, can't wait to have fun being OCD trying to line both of them up straight and level! Now to settle in and wait for a month for them to arrive.

So I went for a ride today, stopped by the bike shop to get some water as I extended my route a bit, as I was heading back out, I went to grab my helmet off the bars, dropped it, and it bounced under the car that was pulling in .....................So I got a new Trek Velocis in White. Very light, but does not have a magnetic clamp like old one did. While I did not see any real cracks or anything in the old one, I was not taking any chances.

Drum brakes worked just as well as disk did on the initial braking action, they stopped the cars, in a panic they would lock up the tires, and it was the tires adhesion to the pavement that stopped the car, not that they were drums or disks. The major issue with drum brakes was overheating and they would fade with repeated braking, the disk can do to. Brake Pad Fade (Mechanical Fade):

• Occurs with disc brakes.
• When a brake pad operates beyond its designed maximum temperature range, its friction material (brake lining) starts to degrade.
• Dynamic Brake Fade:
  
  • Can happen with both disc brakes and drum brakes.
  • In disc brakes, dynamic fade often results from using low-quality or unsuitable brake pads. It can also occur due to brake caliper lag (where the caliper remains stuck to the rotor even after releasing the brake pedal).
  • In drum brakes, dynamic fade occurs when the brake material or friction surface of the brake shoe vaporizes at elevated temperatures.
• Brake Fluid Fade:
  
  • Brake fluid can also experience fade due to excessive heat.
  • When brake fluid overheats, it can form air bubbles, leading to a spongy brake pedal feel and reduced braking performance.
