can triple/double use same STI shifter?

A friend is trying to upgrade his touring bike with some old ultegra 600 shifters, which I pulled off an old double chainring bike for him. Will these work with a triple chainring? Or are the STI shifters specific to the double or triple version? Thanks!

the right one (rear) will work, I don't think the front will, There are more than 2 clicks on the front lever, but it mainly for trimming the FD, I may be wrong however, I'd consult your LBS, or maybe post this in the mechanics forum.
