I would have chosen black, but I recently put tanwalls on a dark frame and was pleasantly surprised. @sloar, post a pic with the tanwalls on!

It took me over 30 years to get over myself and try colored tires on my Mercian. I'm glad I did.

I"d say go with a blood stripe, like on our dress blues.

You already have the red cables and decals, so go with red wall tires, red saddle and red bar tape.

Yes, I'm serious! Hey, its Italian! It would look killer.

I called it an NCO stripe, earlier. I didn't want to creep anyone out.
It's based on a pretty scary battle.

Are you ONE too? Dress blues, shower shoes and a light coat of oil.... Chapultepec was where the red stripes got started.

Yes red would be OK, red, yes definitely red.

Definitely too much red in the second picture, the black makes the red stand out on the frame.

I am inclusive but haven't had any red, blue, white etc. tires yet.

I'm getting a nice pair of used Carlisle Lightning Darts next month.

I was glad that I got my blood stripes 'pinned on' on a Friday......my legs had all weekend to recover.

On that bike, I'd also opt for gray sidewalls. I put these on my gray Miyata 710...

My general rule of thumb, is tan walls on dark frames, but I like black walls on light frames. What also threw me was the dark anodized Mavic rims on my Super Course. I got the wheel set free from a good friend. My Peugeot came with thin white stripe black Marathons, but I like Paselas so much that I went with tan walls there too. Bottom line, most vintage bikes look best to me on tan walls. Leave the bright colored treads to the hipster fixie crowd. I've never had a really light color bike, but say, a pearl white Peugeot would look best to me on black walls. On your dark gray, I'd probably stick with black. Rules are made to be broken. Just sayin ...

Here's my Raleigh, stripped to bare metal gray, with black Gators, not a bad look. ( I fixed the seat angle.)

I started with black Gatorskins on the Raleigh.

The gold Peugeot on black Gators.

Finally settled on tanwall Paselas.

The Peugeot now on Paselas.

My Legnano on black Gatorskins.

Finally went to tan wall Paselas, after 20 years on black.

Ditto. E4 was a double whammy. Then the gold jump wings then the FRCN, and then E5...,by the time E6 came around I was one mean little grunt....and the older SNCO’s left me alone. If I’d just known that earlier.

That's what you get for going grunt, wing-wipe types like me didn't worry about that stuff, just the unlikely event of getting a stripe. Jump wings have to be "pinned on", or else they would get blown off when you left the perfectly good aircraft on purpose.

Conti Gran Prix Classic

Had similar dilemma on mine and got these Contis in 25mm. Frame color pretty similar to the OP. Tires are more of a brown wall and not tan.

Ha Ha, I hear you. Being young mitigates stupid. I moved up way too fast, my common sense was like a tomato hit by a truck: always playing ketchup.... We lived the saying "hey, watch this..."

How do those Grand Prix Classics ride? I have been contemplating switching to these on my CAAD 10, and now that I am swapping to clincher rims on the two C&V rides, they seem more inviting for all three of my bikes. I like the GP 4000S II, that I am riding now on the CAAD 10, much more supple than my old Gatorskin regulars.

Still cold here in NW Ohio, so only a grand total of three miles on the Contis on a shakedown ride. I am a novice though, so I couldn’t really give an educated evaluation. They did seem pretty compliant to road imperfections with the 90psi I inflated them to. Seemed softer than the 23 Bontragers at 100psi that were on it when I got this bike in the fall. I did read good reviews on these before I purchased them though.

I rode the old Grand Prix with that sipeing/tread pattern on my old Cannondale R500, and I liked its feel. The GP4000S II have been nice on my CAAD 10, much more supple than the Gatorskins I rode for several years. Those brown walls look really nice, I believe a set will get ordered this week for the rim swap wheel set I am building up for my steel bikes.

Thanks much for the reply. @sloar sorry for the thread hijack!

Semper Fi,

GP Classics are freaking awesome if you can get past the part where they don't come bigger than 25mm. I've got them on both the Paramount and Raleigh, so I guess I found the ride smooth and grippy enough to justify buying them twice. The quality is night-and-day compared to Paselas (which I do consider to be pretty decent tires). The rootbeer-colored sidewalls look great, although for me they took a bit of getting used to.

On the Raleigh I started with the GP Classics, then switched to some 32mm Paselas I had hanging around. After a couple of weeks I switched back. No-brainer.

The 25 width is a wide as I intend to use, these two frames won't accept much more anyway. I'm perfectly happy with either 23 or 25, even some 21 Conti tubs are good for this pavement road only person.

To slightly change things up, this bike is painted in its original Mercedes anthracite grey, Matrix ISO C II anodized rims. The Tufo C-S33 Special dark red, skin wall tubular for clinchers set nicely.

(On its second pair of these tires plus have since changed saddle.)
