Gravel Worlds

Anyone else joining the party for the 150 (or the halfsy)? Probably going to get my butt handed to me on the full, but I'll have fun anyway

my in-laws live in Lincoln, but I doubt I'll be there for this event (we're planning on July), seems like whenever I'm there I miss out on the few competitive events that happen there. I will say that if I did live there I'd probably choose a gravel/cx bike over a road bike.

BikeReg.com makes it easy to shop around for local-ish rides. Otherwise you have to know from your club.

I didn't know about Gravel Worlds until this fall Tour de Nebraska announced an (optional) all gravel route every day....one of mi amigos thought it would be wicked fun and a new challenge (since we have done the road routes for 5+ years)....so I threw around the idea of a build....then said amigo mentions that he and several others in our Tent Circle on TdN are doing Gravel Worlds. And tada I got roped in

Thanks! I didn't find a local ride... but I did find a local swap meet. It's on my calendar.

Won't do it this year but I was there last year, and it's a solid ride. Super well-organized and well-supported, and a great route. Endless rollers. And it's almost entirely gravel so you don't have to worry too much about mud if it rains the night before, like it did last year. There was a half-mile section of muddy minimum maintenance road last year, which was mostly dry by the time of day I got to it, and the rest was gravel.

The only reason I'm not going this year is because of time constraints, and it's a lot of work to train for both the Dirty Kanza and Gravel Worlds.

Looks like it's running opposite direction from last year, and they added 6 miles. Have fun with the rollers!

Last year the rain turned out to be a non-issue. It was a little soggy the first couple of hours but dried up quick.

Hehe...putting in the Roca Rollers at mile 100-something is a bit evil.

I just purchased my gravel bike like week. I had no idea this was out of Lincoln. Even if I wasn't tied up with eclipse events, I am in no way ready for either of these rides year but it's certainly a goal for next year.

I hope those coming in from out of town stay for the eclipse. It'll be quite the show!

how heavy is that thing with all that attachment? Im still deciding if im going to put my 3rd bottle cage. I really want to limit my bike's weight to just 28lbs in all including my saddlebag tools.

  • As pictured ready to ride, C02/tools (in that black 3rd bottle) and 2x24oz bidons and computer/bell....32lbs.
  • Dry weight (no tools/water/computer) racked, ~26.5lbs
  • Dry weight sans racks, 23lbs.

Bigfoot has 40mm GravelKings tubeless and is straight-gauge with a MTB carbon fork Ti....so it ain't a lightweight no matterwhat.

Still debating racking it or not. Since Bigfoot is my commuter/pickup-truck, I keep it racked unless there's a reason not too. I'm honestly not going to break any records no matter what, so the extra comfort from not having my backside pockets packed with stuff is nice...OTOH 5# is 5#.

Loose the racks, and I get two more bottle cages if it is hot...keep the racks and 2 16oz bidons get strapped to the fore-rack, and nutrition on the back rack.

@theVelvetLie and @Maverick13330

I emailed the organizers and lots of people are reporting issues with the official TCX files....Gamin Connect won't let you upload them at all...and on my Edge 1000, the cue-sheet page doesn't come up with the route loaded and live....and I'm not certain the official file as posted ATM will give turn-by-turn prompts....

One of my amigos went and made his own copy of the route on Connect (PM me if you want it)....Corey@PCL offered up this Strava route as an alternative: https://www.strava.com/routes/10174163

I do not have a Garmin, but had no issues with uploading the GPX file on my Sigma Rox. Organizers said they have a verified TCX working, though.

Plus if you have to it's fairly easy to just create the route in strava or ridewithGPS or whatever and export it as a TCX/GPX whatever.

How'd you fare? I saw your bike parked outside of the general store in Malcolm. I dealt with serious stomach cramps from the first gas station until the end (vomited at mile 135 to boot), but still finished - albeit after 14 hours 40 minutes.

Great on you for beating it. That was one mean ride.

Yea by Malcolm I was fried, got a pulled pork sammich at Libby's and climbed off. Did not prepare with 12,000(?) feet of climbing in mind...didn't pack anywhere near enough nutrition (my meager stash was gone before Malcolm), and I knew after Malcolm cell coverage would be too spotty to get a body wagon....I also knew the roads after Malcolm a ton better than the ones before it....and it wasn't getting any easier.

So my first go at a full gravel grinder ended up being an impromptu halfsy/DNF

PS...I had to laugh at what was supposed to be a neutral roll out.

I had a mechanical DNF at mile 125 of Dirty Kanza 200, so Gravel Worlds was my redemption, per se. The course was MUCH tougher than DK. Everything after Malcolm got hard and it got HOT.

Have you ever been part of a neutral rollout? They're all like that. Just pretty much a parade to get everyone out of town safely, but positioning begins immediately.
