I left the aluminum one on my '84 Univega GT. It's in great shape and I think it looks good preserving that "vintage" appearance. My 2000 Fuji Newest had a plastic one that was all yellowed and cracked. That one got tossed with no replacement. I do regular maintenance on them which includes derailleur and cable adjustments when needed.
