Lugged steel, higher end bike. If the rust is just surface it has potential.

In my opinion, yes, it is. Particularly if you are capable of doing an overhaul on it yourself.

Edit: Again, the OP didn't explain their interest in the bike. My comment is if it fits and the OP intends to refurbish and ride it.

The shifters and derailleurs have been downgraded, the hardnose is a plus. $100 is a little high but not unreasonable.

The frame alone is worth way more than $100, assuming it's undamaged. That's a double-butted full chromoly frame and fork with lugged construction, made in the USA. That was Trek's top-of-the-line Singletrack.

Check for dents, bent fork, etc. Also be sure the seat post and stem can be removed. It looks like that bike's been sitting a while. But don't wait too long - for $100 it won't last.

This bike is worth $100 all day long assuming the frame isn't damaged and the wheels are in decent shape even with the crummy replacement rear derailleur and pedals (and looks like the shifters are not OEM as well). This bike is not my size and I'd likely buy it at $100. Watch out for that kickstand as that may have damaged the stays.

I just rode my 1992 Trek 950 (one model down from the 970) to work this morning. I snapped it up for $125 when it popped up on CL a few years back but it was my size and was almost completely original.

Along with what was mentioned before, the cockpit is all replacements. The stem should be a Tioga T-bone, and the bars should have True Tempter makings. The seatpost is also a cheap pillar-style replacement. With all those changes, it's almost weird that the nice original wheels are still there (so are the crankset and the brakes).
