First ride in about 2 weeks after all the rain we've been having. Lots of low hanging mist around. Had a mechanical right at the start of the ride which put the chain past the big cog out back. Not an adjustment screw issue, but the chain is jumping off the upper pulley which allows it to shift over the top of the cog. Anyway, the rear locked up and although I didn't know it at the time (I pulled the chain out, lined everything back up and pretty much quit shifting at the rear for the rest of the ride) I'd erased a section of the tread about 2" long. Never felt it, never saw it - never even looked for it. I only discovered the damage when doing a quick wipedown of the bike apres-ride:



So I got lucky and the subsequent 30 miles went by without a blowout, thank heavens. Got a few more pics:

Just a little jaunt out to Hodges and back - but it was enough to feel good and qualify as a ride.

Pushed my luck, paid the (small) price. Less than a half-mile later, those clouds rolled in from the west and started dumping pea-sized hail on me. Turned tail, ducked under an eave until it was just rain and splashed back home.

First real "splorin" trip for these guys. only about 6 miles the little one bonked or just gave up once things turned more single track. all in all they had fun. really were amazed by riding across the creak.

Got off work today, but had a mid-afternoon appointment so I just went out for a quick twelve miles on the Creme 3-speed. Grabbed a quad espresso at Starbucks then went to Mooney Grove Park, which is the haunt of many a Canada goose... On the way back I went through some country on the south side of Visalia, where there is almost certainly the greatest density of mature walnut orchards in the San Joaquin. Really quite lovely out!

Yesterday, Sunday, @greg3rd48 got up early and drove over an hour to get to my house a bit after 6 AM. We headed down Route 206 into Trenton. Here's the Delaware at Trenton; PA on the left, NJ on the right. Look close and you can see the "Trenton Makes" bridge, on the other side of the railroad bridge.



At Trenton we got on the towpath of the D&R Canal going south:


Then we rode through Bordentown (beautiful downtown... I wanted to get a photo of the Clara Barton schoolhouse, but it was wrapped in blue plastic tarps) and out into the gentle rolling hills of central NJ. Lovely weather for fixing flats!



Before long, the hills stopped rolling; but we did not:


Our bikes at Chatsworth Lake. I believe, if you could transport yourself back in time to 1895 or so, you would see the grand Chatsworth Club on the other side of the water. Alas it burned down many years ago. I was riding my Bottecchia fixie, Greg was on some modern thang.


And we finally got to my favorite road through the Pine Barrens:


Got home before dark, just over 100 miles, what a beautiful day to be out on bikes!

Well, yeah, I mean, freewheels are always disintegrating... they do that, right? I mean, I hate it when that happens... but it happens. I guess that's why Greg left the disintegrating freewheels at home and rode a bike with a cassette. I was thinking along similar lines, which is why I rode fixed.

rhm 's home was the starting point of our century as he mentioned and boy the morning started colder than I had anticipated! Below freezing but it warmed up nicely to the low 50's soon enough once the sun was high. It was a great day to go on a long ride. I think my penance for riding carbon while Rudi rode the Botecchia fixie was the two flats along the way rccardr but thankfully that was the worst of it. I should have taken the Gitane!

Again sitting at my halfway point, enjoying a cool breeze on a sunny day... This little nook between the hills northeast of Visalia is near Ivanhoe, and I've certainly posted other photos from the spot in this thread before. I love it here! Today on the north side of the road I'm watching egrets, herons and coots in the pond while a couple of ranchers herd cattle, and on the south side a flock of sheep are grazing in an open field beyond the canal... Will be a thirty five mile round or thereabouts, but who's counting?

Drake's Estero in the Point Reyes National Seashore this morning.
Sir Francis Drake, the English pirate, is assumed to have careened the Golden Hinde here for repairs in 1579. My bike decided to follow suit.

This Turkey Vulture, warming its wings, was not fooled by my bike playing dead.





I saw a Coyote and an Otter but wasn't quick enough with the camera to catch either one.
