Whaaaa I want my 1980 Tourist to look like that again ( not sure mine ever looked THAT good even then). Lovely bike you have there Lucky. Congratulations and thanks for the pics. Can you comment on the techniques you used to get the bike into this fabulous condition?

Hey thanks erileykc. Completely disassembled everything. Bottom bracket and headset were greased and a couple of balls were replaced. The AW hub was also checked and bearings were packed lightly with lithium grease (helps hold the oil in). Rust spots on chrome was removed with WD-40 and brass wool (fine). I used a very fine brass brush on a dremel to dress up any nuts that had tarnish on them. Afterwards, polish.
The wheels were the most work. I had sore fingers for a week. There was also some rust on the inside of the rims, which I removed with a wire brush on a dremel. Afterwards, all the paint and chrome was polished with Mothers wax and cleaner and then reassembled. Just take your time and polish everything.

The Superbe can take pretty much any chain stay mounted stand... if you have rod brake the fitting of the stand requires a little more work and there are stands designed to with and around the brake rods.

Isn't the stand he is talking about the one that is integrated with the rear rack and is mounted on the rear dropouts?
I don't know where to get one but i LIKE IT and would love to get one for myself. it doesn't look original and may be fairly recently sourced. It looks expensive.

Yup, 28" wheel. The rack doesn't look quite as good as the original one because it extends so far at the back, but I can forgive a bit of ugly in favour of a sturdy stand

I found a similar stand on Amazon, which was more expensive and not good quality. It did not work on my bike because it rubbed on the chaincase. The Steco one looks like it would work great.

I have the chrome Steco rack, love it. https://www.theoldbicycleshowroom.co....les-1840-p.asp
I have a question that doesn't seem quite worthy of its own thread--any ideas on where to get a NOS or in good shape SA trigger shifter? It's for my '48 Lenton, not necessarily looking for something absolutely correct--i think it would have had a 3 or 4 speed shifter--just a decent 50's era shifter. I haven't bought parts like this before, don't know what to look out for with used parts or what I should expect to pay. Any advice appreciated!

Ebay. Search for "Sturmey Archer" and "trigger" or "shifter" or "control," and look at both ongoing listings and completed auctions. You'll get a pretty good idea of what's out there and what it'll set you back. A decent "3 or 4 speed" trigger can go anywhere from $10 to $40, or even more; and ironically you can't tell how functional it is until you try it out. Most of them will work for 3 speeds, but to hold a 4 speed hub in B gear it has to be in pretty good shape internally.

Thanks, rhm. I've looked on eBay a bit but I'm a little antsy about buying one--no NOS ones of that vintage and it just seems like a gamble since they do seem to get worn out or really dinged up or bent. This is when I start to think about cannibalizing another one of my bikes but I'm not quite there yet!
