Painted Churches Tour 2.0

I'm leading another tour of the Painted Churches around Schulenburg, Texas. Last year we had a really nice time despite the cold and dampness. It actually sleeted at the allotted start time, so we all grabbed coffee and started an hour later. It was perfect! This will be a couple of weeks later so the temps "should" be a little warmer. We had a few BFers come out including pastorbobnlnh , panzerwagon , joesch , and rccardr . It'll be on April 6th and any bike, no matter the material, is eligible as long as it was made in the 20th century.

The route is approximately 48 miles with about 2,200 feet of elevation gain. Moderately hilly by Houston standards, and moderately flat by Austin's. A vintage drivetrain can easily handle the hills.

This will be a semi-supported tour. We'll have a sag driver, but bring extra water, your favorite sports drinks, food, etc. and we'll load it all into the sag vehicle.

We'll start at 9am from the parking lot nearest the railroad tracks at the corner of N. Main St. and S. Upton Ave. in Schulenburg. Let me know if there's interest. I hope to see you there.

EDIT: I had to change the date to the 6th/7th due to conflicts with two other large rides in the area.

Not at this table. Maybe this April.

How did I make an appearance in every picture posted by Brad L ? That's kind of embarrassing since I'm not normally a photo bomber.

I wish I could make the trip again this year. Mrs. PB and I will be in Arkansas for the total Solar Eclipse on April 8th, and I don't believe I can convince her to detour through Texas for a bike-ride, a few days later. Besides, 11-year-old Piper will be waiting for us back in Nashville at our daughter's home, eagerly awaiting rescue from her one-year-old nephew, Teddy.

This looks really fun and I’m trying to get in more rides this year.

Amarillo (6hrs) I could probably do, but this would be a 14hr trip one way so I’ll have to bow out of this one, but excited to hear of future ride reports.

It’s a fun ride but I won’t be able to make it this year.
Plus, the cows scatter when you ride by!

Well, I'm going to look totally flaky with yet another date change. I finally sat down and did my homework to find all the local competing rides. So, this time it's moving to Saturday, April 6th. No more changes, I promise.

No worries-- I'm still 90% still a yea. The good thing about being a hour or two away is that I have little excuse to miss it. The bad thing about being a hour or two away is that I have little excuse to miss it.

Coming from out of the area? Head northwest two days later and you can ride your bike during a total eclipse! (Bring lights.)

The weather for this Saturday is looking promising. There’s expected to be a low of 61° and a high of 78° with partly sunny skies. There will be a tough SSE wind, but it sure beats the sleet from last year.

I drove the route today for this Saturday's Painted Churches tour and found I need to move the start location. Downtown Schulenburg will be taken over by Sausagefest, so the start location is moving to the park at 1103 Bohlmann Ave. I have a great idea for lunch afterwards! 😋

We had a total of 9 riders come out for the tour this year. The weather was pretty nice with cloudy skies and a 66° temp at the start and hovering just below 80° at the the end. The wind, though, was a challenge. It was blowing from the SSE at a around 15 mph with gusts in the upper 20s. panzerwagon brought his nephew out but arrived a bit late, so they met us at the second church. I had to move the start location two days before as I found out downtown Schulenburg would be closed for a festival.

All in all, I'd call it another successful event.

The SSE wind meant it would be a headwind for much of the last 12 mile section of the route. It was tough!
