Hence my need for a smaller bottle. I got a couple nice little bottles with nozzles when I got my new ball bearings for hubs, and honestly the nozzle on those bottles is just silly - what am I gonna do, squirt the bearings out? So I might transfer the bearings to an old prescription bottle (because 35mm film cannisters no longer exist in nature) and use the nozzle bottle for sealant to carry with.
So, today's ride I carried the spare, strapped under the seat as you see above. I didn't take the sealant and valve core wrench, because of the size of the bottle. Rode ~26 miles, no tire incidents. Got home, and in the process of putting the bike away, discovered I'd left the frame pump at home, having taken it off so I could attach the tail light to the seat tube under the seat cluster, because I took the Varia and between the tire and the Varia there was no real estate left on the seatpost.
I'd have felt pretty damn silly if I got a flat, pulled the old tire off, stretched the new one into place, and then discovered I had no means of inflating it!!
So perhaps I need a "Why Not Neither?" meme.

If, and it's a notable if, I can get myself in decent shape I really need to journey to the eastern side of the mountains this summer. Had several epic rides over there in happier times.

I will admit that, while I stored my attractants in the restroom before turning in, I totally forgot about the jalapeno and cheddar bagel I had stashed in my tent's gear loft to hide it from little critters while I showered. When I woke that morning there was a pile of bear scat maybe 15' from my tent. The thing most likely walked through the campground (I was the only one there on a Sunday) and close by my tent to get to the dumpsters. Things could have ended badly for me.

As I was driving around last night, prowling for some oat milk and a second dinner, it occurred to me that I've been overlooking what might be the most important part of this whole phone set-up business for my son: loading it with good music.
He was gifted a iPod shuffle for Christmas last year, and he was really looking forward to having a music player of his own, but we couldn't get that little piece of **** to work. Besides, it would have been really limited in terms of capacity and playback options. Anyway, yeah, I've gotta go through my library and load up his phone with good stuff before I hand it over. I've only got three weeks, though, so it may come down to the wire.

Oof.
I got taken up over Paris Mountain this afternoon by my boss. I would have really liked a 30 or a 32 in the back so I wasn't mashing so much.
I had to stop twice. The first was about halfway up in an attempt to keep my heart rate under control, but that proved futile since it just keeps getting steeper towards the top. It was also much warmer than I'm used to riding in and it got pretty stifling at points.
I blew up about 50 yards away from the end of the climb - maybe I could have made it if I knew that the end was so close. Turns out my max heart rate is at least 198bpm
The descent sure was fun though!

I'd like a nice, 1000+ foot climb sometime, just to experience it... but I don't feel the need to have that be a regular occurrence. But looking at abshipp's Strava info on the climb - yeah, 20 minutes at 7mph might drive me batty.

Got my second shot a few weeks ago and like many people I felt like absolute trash for 24 hours -- extreme fatigue and I took the day off work and lay on the couch watching crappy daytime TV. But then the next morning it was like nothing happened.
Started riding with a small group of friends, all fully vaxxed, for the first time in over a year. Still not willing to join the only local group rides because they've always been sketchy af and now they're full of people who have acted, let's just say less than responsibly over the past year.
I didn't ride much last year for many reasons -- motivation, sold our house, etc., so I'm basically starting over. My average speed is still OK but my endurance is crap.
But in other news my wife and I started fostering kittens through our local shelter at the start of pandemic and we ended up foster failing with the first litter we had. Now they're ornery 1-year-old healthy happy cats who are aloof and indifferent except it sure seems like they always happen to be in the same room as us.
Here's a picture of how it started vs. how it's going. (We initially adopted 2 but then went back and adopted the third one after he didn't get adopted right away.)

If anyone wants cats, just let me know. I have a bunch that roam around outside our house that you can have for free. Just have to trap the mangy varmints. Local pickup only.

I was poking through YouTube a little earlier and came across this video of low passes by fighter jets -
That reminded me that Duluth, MN (the only Duluth that matters) has an airshow each year (other than getting 2020'd). I checked and the show is in a month and a half and tickets were still available, so I picked up tickets for the boy and I. A father/son day at the airshow will be another nice bday gift for him.
