Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Noooo - virtual gravel bike. On Zwift, each bike and bike type has different qualities (weight, drag, etc) that'll affect your speed over different simulated terrain.

Our High School Yearbook was the first one at our High School that had color pictures, but only two pages. So we decided to do a class picture up in The Narrows - a section of Conewago Creek where it drops rapidly through a bunch of enormous boulders. (I think Indyfabz will have ridden alongside it on Rt 234, coming down from US30 toward Arendtsville*.) The photographer set up way above us - Can't remember how, but it seems like a really bad place to be up a ladder! - and we all arranged ourselves around on the boulders.

It was the mid-70s. All the guys were gonna move to Montana and become foresters or something. One of them actually did. At the very least, they were going to move far away. A very few of us did.

*Spellcheck lights up the correctly spelled Arendtsville. That's how obscure my hometown is.

I have almost as many bikes on Zwift as I have IRL. I don't know that it makes any difference, but when I do crits I use the Canyon Aeroad 2021 with the Cadex wheels. When I do anything with much climbing, I use the Canyon Ultimate CFR and the DT Diecuts. Of course, with my low-res setup, they all look the same anyway!

I just need to eat my Wheaties and HTFU, I guess.
Based on what I saw, and what GJ has experienced, the gravel bike wont penalize you as much on the paved section as the road bike will penalize you on the gravel sections.

When I was picking up the Litespeed on Saturday, I talked with the LBS owner about wheelbuilding. I mentioned my hesitation because of the expense of the proper tools and all. He said I should go ahead and build them up, do as good a job as I could and then bring them in and he'd check/adjust the spoke tension and trueness. I suspect some of that depends on sourcing parts from him, which is eminently reasonable.

The only halftime that would make everyone happy would be to have Knoxville Community Band perform.

Yep. Eli was Supercross champion in 2020, the year they finished the season with a string of races at the same stadium in Utah. They even had some races on Wednesdays. Oh, and no fans.

Knowing who you're talking about, I'd say yes. Also, "Sexual Anarchy" sounds like a good name for a band.

I'm sure that, like everything, it depends and it's relative. It can make a significant difference for climbing. My set-up, C'dale Evo and Lightweights, saves more than a minute up the Alpe, which would be pretty tough to claw out, otherwise. If you're comfortably tucked in to a group? Yeah, I dunno.

I mentioned last week that I had signed up for the free trial of Wahoo's SYSTM training app, because I was curious about their whole '4DP' approach which makes more sense to me than using just FTP. So I thought I might do the Full Frontal test. I watched some videos about it this weekend. Now I'm not so sure. The recommendation to have a "Sick Bucket" handy is more than a little off-putting. Plus, you know, I'm 64 years old, fer chrissakes. When professional athletes say, "It's the hardest thing I've ever done! I'll never, ever do it again!", it does make it seem kind of ... dangerous? More than that, though, is the realization that, since I've never even TRIED to do a 5 minute all-out effort, let alone that, then a 20 minute all-out effort after that, and a 1 minute all-out effort after THAT, perhaps I should consider walking before I try to fly.*

BUT one thing I saw is that SYSTM has a warmup workout that's supposed to rev you up for the test. I'm thinking maybe I'll do that warmup and then the Half Monty again.

My other observation is about YouTube, and it's that no matter the subject, YouTube lives up to Sturgeon's Law, that "90% of everything is crap." I see SO MANY poorly done, unengaging videos, on every subject I look into. 20 minutes of talking to a camera about a SPORT, without any video of what you're talking about? Why would ANYONE think that's good videography?

*I also would observe that chickening out is also the sort of thing that says something about one's motivation and personality.

I think the aero frame and wheels might make a difference in the sprint in a crit, as well as when attacking for strategic/psychological reasons, but yeah - it shouldn't make much difference in a bunch. It's almost talismanic, though, for me. I choose a different bike for different rides, even though I'm not really paying attention to time or setting PRs, just because I can.

Yeah, I'm not so sure bout that - maybe I'll give it a try later in the week. What I'm seeing on ZI, though, indicates that they don't do so hot on pavement. Also, one of the (additional) challenges with Anquetil is that the group is almost non-existent; in both of my rides, I don't think that there was ever more than 4 or 5 other riders, so sheltering in the pack on a slow bike ain't happening. I think that I'm right on the edge and that it'll be popped if I do, popped if I don't, but we'll see.

I was watching closely for a wardrobe malfunction, but, of course, there weren't any.

I love this meme, largely because every time I try to import gene expression data into Excel, genes like Septin 2, which is abbreviated "SEPT2" always get converted to dates.
