Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Value of a '10 Cervelo S1 w/Ultegra?

I've got a lead on a 2010 Cervelo S1 with Ultegra components that's a close distance away. Seller is asking about $1400, but I was thinking this is too much for the bike... a brand new Allez with Tiagra components can be had for $1425. Any thoughts?

A brand new Allez with Tagra can be had for cheaper than $1425 https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bik...litemidcompact

Origional MSRP for the 2010 S1 was $2200, what kind of condition is it in? if it is a craigslist sale post the link.

Right you are -- I was looking at the Allez Comp to come up with the $1400ish number.

Shimano R500 stockers. Upgraded bars.

Here's the link: https://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/bik/3523884423.html

I paid ~$950 for a 2005 Soloist with Ultegra. But the shop gave me a $500 trade-in credit on an old CX beater I didn't want any more.

Not bad looking from these pics, my rule of thumb for CL bikes is always make your first offer lower than asking price then try to agree on something. MSRP was $2200...It's almost three years later.....I would offer $1200.. others may give you more info.

The wheels and crank aren't great. You can get new R500 takeoffs for around $80-100 on Craigslist. They're not bad budget wheels, just not great. I personally wouldn't pay more than $1100 for that bike (maybe $1200 tops if I really wanted it.) $1500 and up is where you start finding some nice used full carbon fiber bikes so the asking price seems high.

BTW, MSRP is sort of a meaningless number on a used bike IMO. Wasn't Cervelo selling some of their carbon fiber bikes for $1k+ off MSRP in the past year or two?

FWIW, I sold my month old Soloist Ultegra (literally rode it twice) for $1800. BUT, that was when carbon bikes were still super rare. I'd honestly offer $1k and settle for $1,200 - but only if it's MINT. It's the best-looking year S1/Soloist in my opinion and although it's aluminum, it's pretty stiff and quick.

Just saw the link. It looks good but it doesn't say anything about mileage (although that can be made up too I suppose). If you can get a glimpse at the crank/cassette, you'll at least have a better idea of exactly how much wear and tear.

I'd probably offer $1000. It's a great, great frame (my race bike is an '08 Soloist), but I agree with Dunbar that the wheels and crankset don't add much value.

It's probably worth $1200 if it that's the bike you've been looking for - somewhat less if you are just looking for a deal. I agree with others that the crank, wheels, and brake calipers aren't great. Lots of other factors to consider when weighing that bike vs. a new Allez (or similar).

FWIW, most bike shop sells bikes new 10-15% off the MSRP. For each year that pass by, an additional 5% is taken off the price for "closeout discount". This is not taking into account any special sale that could go on.
Even a pristine used bike is not worth the same as the same bike from the store, solely because most manufacturers do NOT honor warranty for second hand owners.

I have an aluminum Soloist, and a carbon fiber R3. The Soloist is faster on flat ground. It's a great frame!

That stem looks really short too so maybe the fit was wrong and that's why they want to dump it. It's also older Ultegra (not internally routed cables). I think $1000 would be a good number.

Ya know, I've heard a lot of folks mention that they prefer the shifting (but not the looks) of 7800 vs. 7900 (under tape routing) saying that DA 7800 is still the best shifting Shimano group. I've seen far fewer comments on 6600/6600 SL vs. 6700 and don't personally have the experience with both. I agree that limits the value a bit on this bike...but the riding experience might be pretty darn similar.

1200 sounds about right. Its a far better bike than the Allez, hard to compare.

Its a sweet bike, I have one myself

I have an R3 also! First carbon bike and I love it. If the Soloist was the right size, I would have kept it- it was a great bike.

I can agree to this. I switched 105 shifters from external cabling to internal and while I'm still getting used to the new stuff (about 2 months now of winter riding with gloves that lack feel) the old stuff felt a bit crisper. But because I'm vain i prefer the looks and I don't plan on going back anytime soon.

I have one bike with 5600 and one with 5700 105. This has been my experience as well. The 5600 seems to be more crisp. I prefer the shift feel of the 5600, but prefer the feel of the hoods and look of the 5700 with the hidden cables.

I have one of those, bought new in 2010 for $2200. If I were selling it today, I would probably try selling it for $1200, but I think $1000 would still be a fair price even with throwing in the extra wheels.

I have a Cervelo R3 (in fact, two of them) and a Cervelo P2SL - which is the aluminum time trial version of the S1 (I assume they ride pretty similar). The aluminum frame is a nice frame but it is kind of a rough riding bike on the somewhat rougher roads around here compared to the R3. After riding carbon frames, I doubt I would ever buy an S1 or any other aluminum frame again (my old CAAD 9 was the same). If you want an aluminum frame though, it is probably better than most of them.

Worth 1000$ no more, no less. This seller is crazy (or very greedy) for wanting that much.

Also his bike fit....I can imagine to be terrible. And those huge huge gigantic drops :\

Thanks for all of the advice, everyone! I'm going to check it out this weekend and do some wheeling-and-dealing.
