Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Finally....A Saddle that Works!

I'm sitting here looking at 12-13 saddles which had to be purchased to get here and finally found one (maybe 3) that works for me. A Fizik Arione or Fizik Antares / Alliante Kium rails. I was told any saddle from Fizik with an "A" will be basically the same. Super comfy, excellent quality.

Bontrager In-Form RXL while being decent quality was horrendous, Selle Italia Flite was OK, the others are all in the same quality category $$$ range.

Anybody try a Cobb or ISM monstrousity and like them?

Fizik Works !!

So, which one did you get? The Arione is way narrower than the Aliante, so they are not all the same.

Whoever told you that Fizik Arione/Antares/Aliante are basically the same should be sequestered for giving world class stupid advice. Unless round, semi-round, and flat are all the same designs. You better try them to see which works for you. Antares is the one that works for me, having been on that as my primary saddle for 2+ years. Not too soft, but slightly hammocks my sit places. Comfort on long rides with this one is very dependent on getting it right fore/aft. Too far forward, even 2 cm, and it doesn't work for me.

GC3, your right, I ignored his statement, I bought the Arione and the Antares, like the arione a bit better. I will NEVER buy another saddle for the rest of my life. Not that I'm thrilled with the Fizik's but because I spent so much $ to get there.

Hopefully you were smart enough to buy them from one of the unlimited-returns-policy vendors so you can return them.

There are three saddles that work for me, Selle San Marco Regal, Fizik Alliante and Selle Italia SLR 135 Gr. Maybe they have something in common like width or support for the sit-bones as I can hop on my bikes with these saddles and my butt is happy.

I know we all have different posterior. If the Fizik Alliante works for you, the other two I mentioned might work too.

Fizik kurve snake works for me. Tried some specialized and was not impressed. I did not have to search through so many saddles as you though.

I also went through a few saddles_ my first being an Alliante and eventually ended up with a take-off Arione that I was able to steal for 37 bucks off ebay. Took it on an 85 mile ride the next day and at the end I thought "This is the one for me!". I was really glad because I love the ability to keep using my ICS Fizik bag.

This is slightly off topic, but has been plaguing me - What is the difference between the Arione and the Arione Tri 2 saddle? From what I have read they are the same basic design but the Tri 2 has more (maybe softer) nose padding... After that I would assume its the same?

They are similar in shape. The tri2 being a little longer and more padding on the nose. The padding is a little softer as is the material. I liked the Arione but the firmness bothered me on longer rides. Switched to the tri2 and liked it more.

Thinline-i wouldn't be so firm in saying you will never buy anoher saddle. I like my fizik for a while until I just didn't.

For me, riding the Arione felt like sitting on a baseball.

Thanks for sharing. I'm glad it worked out.

I liked the antares on may old bike. In my more agressive position on my new bike it did not work for me at all. For that bike the specialized Romin works much better.

since we are talking Fizik saddles i might as well ask...

in layman's terms what exactly are the differences between the arione, antares, and aliante?

from what i gather arione is the skinniest (i think its 130mm wide?) and the anatares is 145? so is the aliante the "large"? ...or meant for larger people with wider hips?

i see on the fizik site the diagrams of a cyclist bending down, and that it seems the saddle differences are based on the rider's flexibility...
well lets just say i am a big guy with wide hips (im not super fat, have 18% body fat as of now but still gradually going down...but i do weigh 215ish and am 6'2) but im pretty flexible (on the Fizik site it shows the guy who belongs on the Aliante cant even touch his toes haha)...i can touch my toes!! but i dont think that means i belong on a arione...

anywho sorry to thread jack just curious...

The most comfortable seat (to my butt) that I have ever found was the Selle SMP Lite 209. Only problem with it is the embroidery on the sides of it wear the insides of my Assos bibs... I have emailed SMP and they acknowledge that the embroidery mangles about 60% of the bibs on the market, but they have no intention of changing their design - very frustrating.

I ride the Specialized Roman Evo with pretty good results...

Here's my two cents, as alluded to above....think in terms of how Prologo describes their saddles: round, semi-round, and flat with minor width, length, padding and "flex" combinations. Fizik doesn't come out and say it, but if you examine the marketing jabber they have, it is remarkably similar.

Round = Aliante
Semi-round = Antares
Flat = Arione

By round, semi round flat you mean the fore/aft curve of the saddle right ?

Is there any way to work out what you need without having to ride all three to decide? Like larger riders would want round so when they sit it flexes to a flat position where a lighter rider wouldn't cause the flex and be uncomfortable and thus would need something like the arione that is already flat ?

Or is this just dependent on the shape of each person arse ? lol

I like my Arione and I'll only replace it with a VS shortly for a little more "room".
