I don't think anybody should be distracted by earphones while in the saddle.
That said, I always have some music on when I'm building up bikes. These days I mostly listen to stuff like this:
https://khmermusic.thecoleranch.com/R...s_Paen_Ron.wma
https://khmermusic.thecoleranch.com/Gompenge.mp3
Believe it or not Cambodia churned out good garage/pop in the '60s!

I have an MP3 speaker setup on the Schwinn Triplet - it's a music mix, heavy on Chess Records Chicago blues and I typically toss in a good bit of early rock (Didley, Turner, Berry, Richard).

I use my phone snapped into a RAM handlebar-mount holder as my bike computer/gps/endomondo ride-tracker. The RAM mount rides on a rail that is part of my front bag decalleur just below the handlebars and mounted just above the front rack. It's only about 2-1/2 feet from my ears -maybe even less.
Endomondo has a nice built-in music player. With the phone volume set at about 1/2 of max I can hear it plenty loud enough just using the phone's speakers. People riding about 5-6 feet from me can barely hear it. My music is less loud on average than most people's noisy bikes.
My bike itself is silent other than a slight tire hum. VO Grand Cru sealed-bearing derailleur bogeys and a properly-adjusted derailleur/wheel orientation go a LONG way to a silent drivetrain. Proper adjustment of the rest of the bike keeps other squeaks/creaks at bay as well. Music doesn't have to be loud to be enjoyable -and earphones are not necessary. The phone speakers work quite well. I can easily adjust the volume with one hand to account for ambient noise so that it is loud enough to be heard in loud auto traffic in the city -or quiet enough not to disturb others on idyllic multi-use paths through the many local parks.
Yesterday's ride was a medley of Natalie Merchant -both 10k-Maniacs and also her newer solo work...

I never listen to music while I'm riding. I like to be able to hear cars coming up on me.

Let's change the question to: If you listen to music, what music do you choose?

I listen to the birds, insects, and amphibians while I'm riding. It's music to my ears.

I have this wonderful jukebox constantly playing in my head at all times. That's the only music I hear when riding a bike. I'm not about to put anything in my ears while riding.

I'll admit it - I listen to music while riding - but not when I'm in town. I live in a rural area and it's a high traffic day if I get passed by more than 5 cars on a 25 mile loop. I've got a huge range on the MP3 - some of the newer stuff my kids like (LMFAO, Black Eyed Peas) to contemporary Christian, Ethiopian, country and 80's stuff like ZZ Top, AC/DC, Loverboy, Journey, etc.

It's amazing how controversial this subject can be. I don't think anyone will be forcing anyone else to put earbuds in their ears any time soon -so why all the emotional outburst over this?

There are also other ways to listen to music than earbuds. I don't think my speaker on the triplet distracts me or prevents me from riding responsibly. I can hear traffic, people, etc. just fine and we can enjoy some tunes.

After being involved in two nasty auto induced crashes in the last few years, I will never do anything to dull the senses whilst riding.
I'm pretty careful regarding alcohol as well and marvel at my friends that do Ragbrai every year while having beers in every port.
Last time I did Ragbrai there was an acquaintance that strapped a Sony boom box to his rear rack.
Made lots of friends while playing "God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols county after county.
His performance may have been beer induced, but he was one heck of a rider.

Exactly -my phone speaker works well for me too in playing the music unobtrusively in such a manner that it doesn't harm my ability to hear other traffic noises or too loud such as to annoy others in my vicinity.

I don't prefer any earbuds in my ears while riding. Force of habit I guess from growing up riding in a congested urban (NYC) setting. Need to be very alert.
These days, I don't enjoy the sound of vehicles rushing past me....but I rather hear them approaching than focused on my favorite tunes.
While wrenching, the MP3s are always playing in the background. I listen to jazz, 80s( synth pop, brit bands), and vocal trance. Oh, and Car Talk on NPR should it be on at the time. Those guys are hilarious.
