Mrs datlas got some wooden kitchen armchairs off FB recently. I don’t like to use them because the arms are too high to fit under the kitchen table. She had the bright idea to cut an inch off the bottom of each chair leg so the chairs will fit. The only power saw we have is a miter saw. I tried to explain to her this is not really the right tool for the job, but she is adamant to cut the legs. Wish me luck.

I have been explaining this to Mrs. GeneJockey, that one thing we MUST have is a garage, ideally attached. I still can't believe I did two winters in Ithaca with an MGB ragtop.

after being thwarted last weekend (gg half marathon, bridge paths closed) i set off early this AM (6:50am) to avoid ANOTHER bridge path closure, this one for the “mermaid race.” 7:20 closure time. i’m 20 minutes from the bridge, tops. got there and it was already closed. “oh, yeah, those web postings are always wrong whatever it says we close the paths at 6am on event days.”
there was a shuttle … with a bike trailer. ugh. took the risk and loaded the bike, held down with one metal bar with rubber padding.
thankfully no disasters, and the rest of the ride was awesome other than completely frozen/numb hands. it was about 40 in the coolest spots, downhill in the shade, and the combo of effective wind speed and the temperature really got me.
in the market for better gloves, touchscreen a must, hopefully not too bulky but better protection against cool winds….

About 2/3 of the way through the ride, the vest seemed superfluous, but I kept it on anyway. By that time, my jersey was all sweaty and it would have been really chilly riding into the wind!

A patient of mine recently asked me to please see her husband as his prior physician retired. I know from chatting with her that at least in the past, he was an avid randonneur and at some point (I am guessing 15 years ago) he had done P-B-P more than any other North American. I did agree to see him, and I will try to NOT talk bikes with him.

Changed Dentists recently to get one in easy bike range. First thing he said when he came in the exam room was "did I see a Lynskey parked in the bike rack?" Just don't count the time talking bikes against patient care time.

Night before last MoAlpha was in my dream. Doing screaming descents into blind curves on what appeared to be the PCH. Himself and one or two others. I could only watch in amazement that they survived to do it again.

Interesting. My fingers/thumb are usually the body part that gets cold and gets me annoyed. I mostly solved it with mittens/glove liners/chemical handwarmers, but on a very cold and windy day with temps below say 15F, my thumbs still freeze. Luckily days like that are rare in these parts. I sometimes warm the thumb by keeping it in the finger portion of the mitten.
